Grease or oil?
What do you use to lube the bolt, grease or oil? In my neck of the woods it usually never gets below 0 farenheit and during the summer we can get up to 105. Was thinking some kind of grease that is good to about -20 or so. Thoughts?
Re: Grease or oil?
I put a dab (very little) of grease on the cocking lugs, and just wipe the rest with an oily rag.

At 0-30 F nothing at all, above that a tiny bit of oil.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I like to use just a dab of grease on areas that are showing wear or a shine. Work the action a few times and then remove any excess. Wipe things down with a gun cloth before firing.
Re: Grease or oil?
Don't use grease on my bolt actions. Just a light coating of CLP after cleaning..
Re: Grease or oil?
I spray a light coat of Ballistol and wipe with a clean cloth. I am sure everybody has their own favorite oil for the Mosin Nagant. I believe the soldiers were given the appropriate viscosity of oil for the season. The only bolt I put grease on is on the M-1 Garand along the camming surfaces as specified in the FM 23-5.
Re: Grease or oil?
I grease the locking lugs and the sear because those are high pressure sliding surfaces. The rest is oil.
I'm just here for the free coffee mug and tee shirt.

This isn't nearly like starting a discussion about what to lubricate pistol slide rails with. Oh my goodness that becomes a mess of opinions. I don't think any two people do it the same way.
It's really a testament to how tolerant most guns are that they can be lubricated in so many different ways with so many different products and still function perfectly fine.

I use a judicious amount of Rem oil or USGI weapons oil on every firearm, autos, bolts, pumps, internal parts. No problems. Germans had problems in sub zero with grease and Mausers.Junk Yard Dog wrote:At 0-30 F nothing at all, above that a tiny bit of oil.

Re: Grease or oil?
I have never used grease on a weapon other than when it was going into definite long term storage and then I use RIG. Everything gets Balistoll and has for many years. Like the usual you will see a million different opinions. My thought use what you like but use something! Bill

I'd like to put my 2 cents worth in also.
In the question of Oil or Grease, I say yes.
I also say, what ever brand you have in your hands or on the shelf.
I think "some" is better then "none".

Re: Grease or oil?
A friend brought a new 1911 to the range one day, been laying in the box for ?? yrs. The slide froze open, it would not fire. I got oil off the end of my dipstick and put some inside the slide, got it freed and it ran 8 rounds thru it. He oiled it proper when he got home.

My friends and I bring a pig to the range with us. We slaughter it there on the spot and use it's fatty grease to lube our rifles. Then we have a nice spit roast while capping off rounds down range. Somebody gets the honor of setting the head down range and shooting it.
It's a real hoot when the granola-eating, Bernie-voting, vegan, gluten-free, crystal-therapy, anti-vax, "I'm originally from San Francisco but I moved here to escape the population and taxes" types drive by in their Honda Element on their way to the commune and see us. The expression on their faces is worth it.

Re: Grease or oil?
Personally I always use lubirplate grease on all my firearms, vintage to modern. As a matter of fact my father had his Weatherby and a Swedish Mauser coated in the grease for about 16 years in an storage area without any kind of dehumidifier bulb or device and they still in the same condition as when he stored them. I always put it on everything I can manage to, the bolt pieces and all the metal areas.
