I suppose there are areas in the USA that would need to do that more often. Like in the South. For me, I'm glade it's only once a year! It's OK, I just hate smelling like oil for the next few days!

I've been very busy latly. We are installing new equipment in the shop (over $2 million worth). But I always take the time at least once a year to clean and re-oil all my firearms. We are lucky out here in Calif that the air is dry and usually warm. That took me close to 5 1/2 hours New Years Day. wipe down with oil and run oil patch down bore. All looked great and they were put back to rest.

Re: Busy Busy Busy
I smell like Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, Ash, Poplar, Beech, birch, plus a few other woods that I have been bucking up every few days. Five-six cords worth at a time, 200 cords worth of sticks to go, should take me a few years. I keep all but the few defensive firearms I have in cosmoline, humidity is bad enough here in summer that you can drink the air, and this past year was a wet one. My defensive firearms get regular weekly attention, oil rag on everything, ammo in mags, cylinders or tubes, swapped out once every few months by shooting it, and replacing it with factory fresh. Then there is work, the rest of the time I am researching the proper time length of time for napping.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

It would be hard to find a more humid place then N. Florida in the Summer. All of my guns stay in the air conditioning and don't have a problem. I was careful with monitoring them when we lost power after the hurricane, but they came through fine.

I don't have a rust problem with the bulk that are kept in an insulated block building. I do have a leather problem though, a white film develops on the outside leather straps and pouches, holsters, that wipes right off. It comes back in two weeks time. ?

I'm in Louisiana and I get that some here too. It can get a bit humid here in summer. I think it's some type of mold. I had a Buck 110FG in the sheath sitting on a gun rack and was getting that on the sheath and the knife was getting green corrosion on the brass so I cleaned everything up, oiled the sheath with Red Wing boot oil, oiled the knife with Breakfree CLP Collectors oil and put the knife and sheath in a Ziploc bag with the knife out of the sheath, then put them in the safe. I don't carry it now because I'm home most of the time so that works for me. All of my guns and the leather associated with them are in safes now with silica cans and humidity meters to monitor. What isn't in the safes is wiped with boot oil and in ammo cans. most in Ziploc bags. It helps but doesn't completely some the problem. The boot oil helps a lot but the leather absorbs it so you still have to keep an eye on them.steelbuttplate wrote:I don't have a rust problem with the bulk that are kept in an insulated block building. No problem with rust up here. It was -33 C the day before yesterday which is a little chilly. I have to go to Fort Chipewyan tomorrow to fix some issues with the town water supply. They froze a few things up because the temperature went down to -50 C on the weekend.
Fort Chip is accessible 3 ways: by boat in the summer, by air year round and by air or land in the winter. We will be traveling the ice road to Chip in the morning. 280 km of ice road from Fort McMurray.
Summer is humid but short. Not much can rust when summer is 3 days in June and 2 days in July. I love it up here (or at least I say that when I get my pay cheque). They also have a museum with a small gun collection. No Mosins but lots of Swedes!

You're only allowed like two out there in California by now, I'd think that maintenance wouldn't take long....

Dry climate in my neck of the woods and that may be good to prevent rust on guns but damn..
I get these painful dry weather cracks on my fingers. Gotta keep putting O'Keeffe's working hands cream on them.

Probably pretty correct in a couple more years with Newson taking over as Gov and the entire house and senate (state) are all Dem gun haters. Then they wonder why everyone is leaving Calif. All the conservatives are leaving and going to Florida, Texas, Arizona and such. I won't be able to survive very long here after I retire.mogunner wrote:dolk wrote:I've been very busy latly. The other day on the radio they were bragging how Oaklands murders went down from 71 to 68 this last year! Wow, However Richmond next door went up twice that. These cities are taking a beautiful state and destroying it. And they have the guts to talk about global warming. They need to look in their own back yards.
I have over 300 firearms. That is what took me so long to oil them up. But it's sort of a "therapy" also.

When I lived out there, the first few years were in San Jose. The security company took advantage of my ignorance and sent me out to serve subpoenas in Oakland... I think I survived simply because none of them wanted to mess with someone that insane.dolk wrote:Probably pretty correct in a couple more years with Newson taking over as Gov and the entire house and senate (state) are all Dem gun haters. St. Louis homicides were down sharply this year, all the way from 205 last year down to 185. Still more dangerous to be black there than white.

Re: Busy Busy Busy
Well, 4 months and 27 days till retirement. Not that I'm counting!!
They keep asking me if I would work part time past that date. I just give them a blank stare and walk on by.
I've picked on a nice plot of land for retirement on the streets of San Francisco to call mine. Low crime, not many needles on the ground and very little feces laying around. No one has been killed on that block for over a month now. (sarcasm).

In 4 months and 28 days the sun explodes, figures, don't it? Well, at least you have that free 24 hours.

Anybody have any of the green can military rifle grease that they are willing to part with ? I`ve sworn by it for 40 years now to protect my firearms from Florida`s humidity. Down to my last can. I don`t pickle my stuff, just a light coating inside & out. Never know when they will be needed.
Re: Busy Busy Busy
Come on up and sweet talk to ex-school teacher who runs the place. She taught one of the operators I deal with up there and he's almost 60. She's got to be pushing 100 and still as sharp as a tack.Sonny wrote:Would they sell those swedes?miner49r wrote:No problem with rust up here. The ice road is shitty right now - my guys took 5 hours to go 280 km. The temperature was too warm at -5 C so the road is in poor shape. I have to drive my own truck up there on the 15th so I'm hoping the weather goes down to -30 or so. Less ruts and a lot more ice on the river crossings...

I keep a rag soaked with STP, for wiping down for long term storage, it goes on real thin and contains silicone.Junk Yard Dog wrote:I sent you the eBay link, you can find cheaper at the auto part store that will do just as well.M39 Shooter wrote:Anybody have any of the green can military rifle grease that they are willing to part with ?
