Something I put together several years ago during the nights when I couldn't sleep. Torch, welder, chain saw and a good belt sander you can do about anything one can imagine. I spent several months making parts and finding things that were needed. Stock and axle were pulled from a local place near by that make mining posts and rail road ties. I got the wood just before they went into the dip. Hardest part was finding someone who could make the wide side boards ( cheeks ) for the barrel mount. Customer at my work place had a large bandsaw mill that could cut the width needed.
At the time I built this I'd been a Civil War reenactor for 12 years and been schooled in artillery for safety. I've had this gun to several memorial events joining in with the local American Legion. Barrel weights around 165 lbs while the real mountain howitzer goes near 210 lbs or maybe a little over.
I haven't had it out of the garage in probably 10 years now as most all of my good WWII friends at the Legion are gone now.
We'd fire 1/3rd pound of powder with steel wool at night or a little mix of cooking flour during the day for extra smoke. I've run a few rounds of canister shot ( ball bearings with saw dust ) through it while playing at the farm. I'd never want to try anything solid for fear it might not handle the pressures.
Had a lot of fun testing the barrel before building the carriage. I'd call my mom and she'd step outside at the farm hearing it 8 miles away. Barrel is made out of some type of gas or oil drilling bit. Very heavy walled. I can't remember the bore size now but it's about the size of a soft ball.
