Seeking Info

Post by GRAYWOLF »

New to the Mosin Nagant.
Looking for any info anyone might be able to provide.
Based on what I can find, it appears to be a Russian Izhevsk Armory M38.

I don't really have any history on this particular rifle, but I am attaching pictures that I hope helps those of you with knowledge...

I don't see any extra markings, could this be an unrestored original?

That is a 1938 91/30. M38s are carbines.

What you have appears to be an issued rifle, as in not refurbished before being sold for surplus. A pile of these came in from Spain in the 1950's and again from Romania in the early 1990's, still others from Finland, but I do not see the Finn SA stamp in your pictures. This was made at Izhevsk arsenal in the Soviet Union in 1938, later sent as military aid to Spain, and then the post WW2 eastern block countries like Poland, East Germany, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and so on. The Soviets did refurbish the rifles before sending them out as aid, they had been used by the Red Army during WW2, but long use in eastern Europe put the look of age back on them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

The muzzle appears to have been stove up in the mud somewhere for a while. Is the rifling on the inside at the muzzle?

Treat her like a lady. A little lemon oil on that stock wouldn't hurt either.

I note that it has a late/post war stock. I don't think that would have been original to 1938. I do agree that it does not look like a standard refurb. Balkan maybe.

Recoil is on par with a .308, or a 12 gauge. Tuck it in tight and it is not bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kUqVmfB6Hk

Graywolf, you have a very nice example of a rifle that has been used a lot and somehow escaped the hands of the surplus butcher who likes to ruin them in an attempt to make them better. It likely has been stored in a closet for a couple decades or more and maybe even forgotten for awhile. I'm happy to see that when you cleaned it up you didn't sandpaper it. It's a very nice rifle that is getting hard to find these days
