1945 Izhevsk M44 Mosin Nagant Carbine - Built On US Made Fox Arms Receiver (Soviet Union)

Post by vblue42 »

This is certainly a Unicorn in my collection. For those that don’t know, this is not your typical Izhevsk M44. True it is a late war time or even a post war built Izhevsk, but not only is it non refurbed, built on a Hex M91 receiver, but that Hex receiver is US made by Fox Arms, sub contracted out from New England Westinghouse for their Russian contract of M91 rifles in 1915. So how the hell did a US made M91 receiver get on a post war made M44? Well, there is no way to know for sure but my guess would be that the rifle made it to Russia before the communist defaulted on the contract to Westinghouse and Remington. Likely went through WWI in some capacity. Then somehow missed being sold to Finland or sent to Spain for the Spanish Revolution. Many US made rifles ended up in either Finland or Spain as it seems the Russians really didn’t want those “US Made” rifles in their inventory. Then at some point post WWII it was recycled from its original M91 form to what you see here. I have no idea how it ended up in this configuration but I think it’s safe to say that, because Fox receivers are so rare in any form, this example may even be a one of a kind configuration with potentially no other examples in the US. At least if there are no one has documented one. This rifle has also been well used in some capacity either in extensive training or conflict. It is certainly one of those rifles that if it could talk. This rifle now resides in a place of honor in my collection and will likely never leave. Please enjoy the pics and feel free to comment.

Very nice, I would love to know the what/where/when and why on that one. It does appear to have some use after build. Awesome carbine congrats.

Nice. The Soviets never wasted a good receiver, they just used it to build another new rifle. Receivers are the most expensive part of the rifle.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Very nice! I've seen a few wartime mosins with a NEW receiver but not a Fox contract one.

1945 Izhevsk M44's with recycled receivers are known in P* and H* prefixes. I wonder what was the reason of their production in 1945, considering no recycled receivers were used in 1944 (and only one 1943 recycled receiver rifle is known), and especially considering that since beginning of 1945 it was supposed that factory will return to the prewar quality standards in production

I guess it sped up production to hit that 5 million mark. I agree it would be very rare. A lot of non refurbs with that much use will have a Chinese bolt. Whats that one got ?

Total 1945 production was 763234, with 706638 M44's produced. Info at mosinnagant.net is incorrect
It's less than 3 month M91/30 production comparing with average 1942 month.

What are the markings that indicate this is a Fox receiver?
