Well, it wasn't expensive..hardly any lesson to be learned here. Have been buying these old war horses for a long time. I've about come to the conclusion that it is a SCW example..as pointed out the year and serial number do fall into that arena, and the cleaning rod is drilled out at the front, another indication there.
I wouldn't dream of making a lamp out of this one. I've seen those things, absolutely can't stand them, especially when something of particular historical significance is ruined in the process. I've got a pretty rusty, yet functional bolt on the way, along with a front sight post. It will go on the wall. The bore, after running a rod through it what seemed a hundred times (it was full of the foulest crap you ever saw) turned out pretty nice. Might put a few rounds through it to see how it does.

If the bore is pretty decent the counterbore, although threaded should not be a issue. Hopefully you can check, and pass at least a field guage headspace test. I must agree that unless you have a musty old cabin in the woods a table lamp ain't much to look at. Of course I'm married to a woman who doesn't even appreciate a good deer mount on the wall. :)

It is to me of no historical value now and with a random bolt of unknown head space value and vintage and maybe more bolt heads to buy to correct that head space you are making it cost more at every move. This is what I was trying to get you to avoid. You see I have been down this road many times and I am trying to get you to avoid that route. At this point it is a parts rifle and no matter how many more parts, time, and labor you throw at it there will never be anything there other than a parts rifle that might shoot eventually. But suit yourself however I warn you at 74 I realized way to late you have just so much time in a life and you better use it wisely! Bill ;mywink;

Appreciate it, but I've got $50 in the rifle, bolt is free, and like I said, it will be mainly a display piece. Believe me, I've poured plenty of money into stuff I wish I hadn't in the past.

That's why they call it a hobby, getting your money back out of it is not expected, or assured when it's spent on hobby's. Look at how much some people spend on golf clubs, then ten years later there they are in the $10 section of some tag sale.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
