Improper barrel band?
I'm new here....hi everyone!!
I'm trying to determine why I can't find any examples of this rear barrel band on my new to me 1940 Izveshk 91/30...
She has matching numbers including bayonet but the barrel band on question will not seat all the way back to allow the spring clip to engage...
Sorry if my terminology is not correct....

Re: Improper barrel band?
Yeah that's not a mosin band at all.
On Facebook? Check out the non-sporter preservationist group at: OOOPS. Deleted by Facebook because it's evil to even discuss collectible firearms on social media these days.

Re: Improper barrel band?
What RR said is true but before you do anything we need to see more of the rifle. These rifles travel to and through many countries sometimes. Take a few more pictures of barrel markings and any side and top views of this rifle.

Re: Improper barrel band?
As said pictures go a long way in explaining all things Mosin Nagant. That said it appears to be a Mauser barrel band. Similar to this one, picture shamelessly borrowed from the internet. More than likely someone (Previous owner) broke or lost the correct barrel band and used what was on hand to replace it, ordered the wrong one, or mixed parts up, or didn't give a damn (IE It works somewhat so who cares). Cheap part to replace here's a link to the standard split M91/30 barrel bands.

Re: Improper barrel band?
It takes rare talent to lose or break a 91/30 barrel band. Amazing that whoever did it would use a more expensive and harder to find Mauser band rather than the inexpensive and readily available 91/30 band that would have kept the rifle original. Could be this was done because somebody wanted the sling ring that's on it to get away from the Russian dog collars. What did they do on the buttstock for a ring?
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Didn't think of it that way, good point JYD. Sling access/options makes more sense now I think of it.Junk Yard Dog wrote:It takes rare talent to lose or break a 91/30 barrel band. Re: Improper barrel band?
There are some serious shooters out there who dismiss the Russian sling as good for carrying the rifle but useless as a shooting aid compared to the US M1907 sling ( sometimes called the National match sling) These folks will do just about anything to fit a US M1907 to whatever they are shooting, part of this is having a solid mounting system for the sling, and dog collars or bent wire in the slot do not meet the criteria for a solid sling mount. Back when I was shooting mostly US service arms I was tied into that sling more than once so I can understand it's usefulness. What I can't understand is the insistence on using it with rifles who's performance capabilities rarely rise to the level of a National Match M14, or star gauged US M1903. Mosins unless they are Finn tend to be minute of man, 4-6 MOA at 100 yards is average, with 2-3 MOA not being unheard of. The Soviet sling works just fine for these rifles.

Re: Improper barrel band?
There is nothing "improper" about that barrel band. It does, however, need a Turkish Mauser to go with it.

Re: Improper barrel band?
For a second I was thinking that maybe this rifle came out of Romania and the folks at Cugir put the Mauser barrel band on. But, then I thought that, they would have had tons of the Mosin bands available. Then I saw the pics. Definitely a refurb and someone here put the Mauser band on it. You can find the correct band easily and replace it. Should be able to get a few bucks or at least break even by putting the Mauser band out on ebay...

Re: Improper barrel band?
It looks very similar to a Turkish barrel band.

Re: Improper barrel band?
Yes they are, that's what's cool about them. Rarely will anyone on this side of the pond go to the trouble of making such repairs on a rifle they paid $250 for. That is todays going rate for a 91/30 Soviet refurb. Here we just clamp and glue cracks or hit up eBay for a replacement stock. It's not a trophy winner, that was never the intention of it's Soviet builders, it's a weapon of war made to arm a soldier so they he could use it to kill the enemy's of the nation. Looking pretty was absolutely never the intention of it's makers, by late 1941 many of these were leaving the arsenal with no stock finish, bluing, or even with the tool marks smoothed off the metal. The bluing and shellac were added later as these wartime expedient rifles were refurbished post war. Accuracy wasn't intended to be trophy either, minute of man at 200 yards was good enough for the Soviets, but they can sometimes surprise you.yotgguitar wrote:Yeah...and?..aren't those Arsenal repairs?Junk Yard Dog wrote:Multiple stock repairs, cool.![]()

We do speak a code you are not privi to if you are not a collector, like anyone comming to a new place you are expected to learn the language and ask for clarification if need be. If you intend to continue adding to your collection it would help you to know the talk so you have an idea of what dealers and other sellers at the shows are telling you. Asking for clarification there will mark you as a new collector who they can unload all their problem children on.

I see..
.and now I understand the comments.....I do appreciate the history of these older military rifles....I do intend to add to my collection, although I don't currently have a specific rifle I'm committing to....after buying the mosin from a guy on ARMSLIST, I proceeded to buy a Yugo SKS the following week...my goal (no matter how unrealistic) is to own one of everything!!!!
