New SKS owner
New SKS owner
Hello, just purchased my first sks and was wondering where I would find some ballistic info, have read that the 7.62x39 round is comparable to the 30-30 rd.
is that correct and if so can a SKS be used as a reliable hunting rifle. ...(if possible looking for info on rds that are not FMJ ) fella I purchased from also threw in 250 rds of old FMJ surplus ammo. Not a big deal if it's not sutable for hunting as I only pd $150.00.
(Looking at 154gr SP and 170gr HP)
Thanks,

First off I think it would be a question to what you plan on hunting with it haha. If it's deer my Dad and Uncle use to take deer with them using Wolf Softpoints at 100 yards or less. But those are only 123gr so I'd have to stress shot placement.
Re: New SKS owner
Thx for the reply Lavitias, ya I should have mentioned that, I know this isn't a outdoor or hunting forum but couldn't find anything on the ballistics of the 7.62x39.
(Grain of bullet, caliber, fps from the muzzle, fps @100 yrds, and I believe flbs of energy) I live in NL, Canada ....and the requirements for big game are....atleast a 30 calibre, 100gr bullet or higher, 1930 fps from muzzel, and 1474 flbs energy...( NO FMJ )....(we have moose, caribou, black bear) no deer. Been checking around on different grains, looking at using either a 154gr SP or a 170gr HP.....have a daughter in Nova Scotia and would like to try it on white tails there, thought I could find like a ballistics chart to get an idea. ....Thanks again,
Chéers

Re: New SKS owner
In which case google harder next time :p But with your energy requirement I'd say it's probably a no go for you unless you plan on capping Bambie at point blank range. The 7.62x54r would probably be a much better choice. That being said the SKS is still a great gun to go to the range and plink with.

We would love to be able to buy the SKS for $150.00 down here. It seems that the floor price on them now days is twice that.

What about those overgrown coyotes up there on the island?

Re: New SKS owner
Seems to be quite a few of the SKS's floating around here on the rock, since I purchased this one I seem to notice them more for sale, this one I guess I lucked into... was asking $200. offered him $150. and he accepted. ....buy and sell prices seem to be in the range of $200-$300...It's in great shape, and have been doing some reading about serial numbers and this one has only one # in 5 or 6 different places, As for cyotes was told has to be less then 100gr, and less then 30cal.....223'S and 22-250 big here for them....going to post a few pic's.
Again thx for all the input and info,

Re: New SKS owner
7.62x39 is in the 30cal range. I knew a few guys from your area but only 1 of 4 was a hunter. All outdoorsmen, but mainly sports and fishing. The one hunter lost a bull moose because he was using an Enfield. He claimed he’d brought down every moose he’s ever shot with it but the big bull just walked off. So he stepped up to a bigger bore for next year’s draw.
I remember an article one showed me of the hybrid ‘yotes on the island. Great big bastards they are.
Two were from St. John’s and maintained their captains license. Boy, when they’d getting to gibbering back and forth no one had a clue as to what they were saying.

Re: New SKS owner
That SKS looks like a winner and especially for the price you paid.
Still the same passport then. There’s supposed to be a fantastic zip line somewhere within driving distance at an off-season ski resort.Chico1968 wrote:Ontario
