1962 Civil Defence Radiation Detection set CD V-777
Fallout shelter radiation detection kit in original box, and still fully functional. The last inspection dated are from the 1990's, originally made in 1962 as part of the Civil Defense shelter stocking kit for public shelters in the event of a nuclear war. Most shelters were decommissioned in the 1970's, but many still remain with contents being looted and sold on eBay. I guess nobody wanted to bother hauling heavy box's upstairs to toss them out years back. For some reason the state of Indiana was maintaining these meters into the 90's. Now we have to hope that FEMA will be available to provide food and fallout protection when the bombs fall, I would have rather we still had the old CD still in place, local volunteer's and local shelters fully stocked and ready. Instead we can look forward to the FEMA camp, or stock our own shelters.

This one turned up on eBay, the one I have had for years was from a local source. That one didn't come with the original box or have the two extra meters and books. The shelter crackers are here but the can looks so nice I am not going to open it.

They are new, never used other than testing calibration. Sitting in a shelter waiting for the war to start. Lets hope they stay unused.

They can be very handy also for detecting alien beings.

That is very cool. It is one of those things, that if you need it, it is already too late to do you any good.

Re: 1962 Civil Defence Radiation Detection set CD V-777
FEMA can't handle a hurricane let alone a nuke problem. The Department of Civil Defense was mostly run by local volunteer's, people who you knew, and who knew the local conditions. Now it's strangers from yet another bloated government bureaucracy who work from their " book" being micromanaged by DC and who could give a shit about local individuals, they work in big numbers. The presupplied shelters weren't just for war, they were for storms, earthquakes, fires, floods . The supplies inside could feed people in any disaster, and local volly's had a stake in the community, they had to live there when it was over so that's a powerful incentive not to fuck up. Candy and crackers with canned water might not be everyone's first choice of a meal but it would keep you alive. We have MRE's today that would do the same, but I checked, there are no shelters around here presupplied with such, or anything else for that matter. It's all located in some FEMA warehouse fuck all knows were. The wealthy and politically powerful have their shelters of course. All the shitbag Federal and higher state politicians will be sitting pretty in their presupplied shelters while the rest of us are being irradiated.

Is that a giant ant I see over your shoulder?
Those are amazingly cool artifacts of a time that a few of us remember. How many of you did the drills in school?

We have met the enemy and he is us.
Re: 1962 Civil Defence Radiation Detection set CD V-777
I never did drills like that in school, which is weird since I grew up on military bases attending military schools. But I assume by the time I started Kindergarten in 1971 that was a thing of the past. We did however have a lot of bomb threats overseas, with bombs actually found on occasions. I remember in the first grade in Germany, a bomb blew up in the post office on base. Remember them finding a bomb on the school grounds my Senior year in Germany.polymerase2 wrote:Is that a giant ant I see over your shoulder?

The father of an ex-gf of mine was killed in a terrorist bombing in Berlin. I remember my dad and just about everyone else checking their car everytime they went anywhere for loose wires, tampering etc. It was common place to hear on the news about cars rigged with explosives and someone failing to check and BOOM.

PLO, Red Brigade, IRA, and so on, weren't the 70's fun?

I remember the drills and the CD movies at school with all our cartoon favorites. We didn't get a TV until I was 10 but a bunch of my patents friends got together at some friends house that had a TV to see A-Bomb tests in the Nevada desert at Yucca Flats. They built different type buildings and had cars and even had live solders in trenches to see the effect the bomb had on everything.

Oh yeah plus the Red Army Faction and Baader Meinhof Gang. Living in Spain while Franco was in charge was no fun either. I grew up overseas during some strange, scarey and interesting times, but I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.Junk Yard Dog wrote:PLO, Red Brigade, IRA, and so on, weren't the 70's fun?
As a kid
71-72 Germany
72-75 Spain
77-80 Okinawa
82-85 Germany
As an adult:
88-92 Germany

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
