Candy anyone?

Post by Junk Yard Dog »

To be more correct this isn't candy, it's "Carbohydrate supplement", part of what you would be eating in a government stocked emergency fallout shelter in the 1960's. These and the emergency ration crackers, plus maybe some spam as you sat in the candlelight listening to the clicks of the radiation detector. This can, now part of my Cold War Cool Shit collection, was packed in October of 1963 and is out of a Newtown NJ fallout shelter in the basement of a bank. The guy who sold it to me opened a can and ate all 32 pounds of hard candy, and several tins of the crackers, claimed they all tasted fine. I saw no reason to point out to him that the red dye used in some of these candy's was outlawed in the 70's as being a cancer causing agent. The can is in surprisingly good condition, and looks like it was made last week rather than 55 years ago. I stored it with the rest of my doomsday supplies, if the balloon does go up I don't think I will much give a shit about the deadly food coloring as I munch candy waiting for the radiation sickness to set in.

For all the kids to young to remember, during the Cold War your government actually gave a shit about helping the ordinary people to survive WWIII. They formed the Civil Defense agency and stocked small and large fallout shelters in small towns and big city's in all 50 states. Well built structures like banks, schools, administration buildings had them in the lower floors. These shelters were stocked by the CD with basic survival rations and things like sanitation kits ( a pail with plastic liner) water barrels and radiation detectors ( Geiger counters ) During the Clinton years these shelters were decommissioned and the CD became FEMA, and you are now on your own should the Bomb drop.

The basement of our Federal building had a bunch of that kind of stuff in it, 50 yrs ago. To the best of my memory :oji: I can't find anyone to let me In there now. The ball on top of the flagpole is supposed to have a 1911 packed inside it. :shifty:

It's probably all still there, I have a tin of the crackers on the way, this one I may open and we will try some. Reports from others indicate that they are still edible and crisp after 55 years.

I can tell you were to find your own can of fallout shelter candy Steve, but I can't make miracles happen.

Doomsday rules, when the mushroom cloud is imminent you get to eat whatever you want. I can't eat that candy either, but doing so would ruin the value of the can so it's not going to happen anyway. I had some of this candy many years ago when a surplus store got in cans and sold the candy by the bag. It's just regular hard candy in lemon and cherry, nothing special. Two-three weeks in a crowd of people sitting in the dark eating crackers and candy with the air smelling like an outhouse in high summer....at that point you realize what that pistol you have stuck in your pocket is really for.
