Yugo M48

Post by ffuries »

Since this is one that has been imported though Mitchell's Mausers, and since I don't know what improvements they made on it, I couldn't see posting it under collectable rifles as of right now. I bought it as a shooter more that a collector piece. The stock was very light in color, and seemed dry, these pictures were taken before I broke it down and cleaned the cosmoline off/out of it, there was a ton of it under the stock and in the chamber that is for sure. There is a small repair to the left side of the top handguard. By the time I was done cleaning and oiling the rifle, the stock had darkened up a little bit inadvertently due to handling it with oily hands

Those are very beautiful rifles, mine has a real course wood grain and I'd like to know what type it is. You can see all the upgrades made over the years in the mauser rifles on these. Bolt will close without holding down the mag well spring... Sights are mounted low for better accuracy are just a couple things that cross my mind. I think they're great and a first class rifle. Now if they didn't kick so dang hard.

Mitchells heritage aside it looks like a normal M48 without any Mitchells...improvement's.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Good deal, thank you the expert opinion JYD. I agree that with Mitchell's track record I was leary. Bought it as a shooter and if it turns out to be unmolested even better.

Their improvements are usually on the K98's the Yugos they seem to leave alone so long as you don't buy the most expensive grade. Though I have seen atleast one legit K98 from them you could tell because not only was it still covered in cosmoline nothing matched on it at all lol. You should of totally posted the picture of the Certificate with it though nothing makes me laugh more then this is a real K98k M48 rifle xD.

Yugos were probably in decent shape when Mitchells got them, so I doubt they messed with them much. Nice looking rifle. Shoot it and enjoy it.

This ^

I bought several of these from SOG when they had them a while back for less than $300 a piece (based on JYD's sage advice of these being the "last of the reasonably priced milsurps"). Your's pictured looks very much like all of mine do, originally caked in grease but cleaned up nicely and showing very little wear/use. Several of mine have stocks that are very light in color too, almost a golden color.....very sharp against the shiny steel buttplates. My research seem to indicate that stocks were of either beech or elm, teak apparently was NOT used although many sellers claim to be selling guns with "teakwood" furniture (perhaps confusing elm with teak?) All of mine are elm (the "real course wood grain" as described by Jbob above).

A beautiful rifle and a real shoulder thumper but fun as hell to shoot anyway!

Teak would not be the choice of wood for a military rifle make in Europe at pretty much any time. They used the cheapest, and most available hardwood they could find without getting too carried away . Oak was abundant, but a poor choice due to open grain and difficulty in working it due to it's hardness. Beech, Birch, elm before Dutch elm disease reduced the population. Here it was Walnut, and beech, however at times the European makers used walnut. Maple is nice, soft enough that working it with hand tools isn't a serious chore, but once machine tools came in harder woods could be used. It's not unusual to find M48's in good condition, they are among the few Mauser's produced after the war ended, and unless sold outside Yugoslavia they didn't see another war. I remember them in unissued condition, but even the issued ones were clean. Their service life was short before being replaced with modern semi auto and select fire weapons in the 1950's and 60's. Now they are climbing in price, but back in the day they were the last of the well made and affordable Mauser's. I remember buying a sanitized one, probably out of Syria, for $25 in 1988. I shot that Mauser for years and still have it someplace.

So safe to say, this is not one to be abused or loaned out to fumble finger friends. Guess they'll just have to find a toy of their own. Here's the post from when I first figured out it was imported by Mitchell's Mausers, and figured I had severely sinned.

I never got my hands on a '48, but I have a dang nice 24/47 and it is a great rifle. I also have a pair of the 24s, non-updated and they are also fine guns. The Yugo/Serb rifle builders were no slouches.
