R.I.P. Gunny

Post by Longcolt44 »

I'm sure this man has in one way or another in his movies or many gun videos touched us all in many ways.

Statement from R. Lee Ermey's long time manager, Bill Rogin:

It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people. And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform. He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman of Full Metal Jacket fame was a hard and principled man. The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need.

There is a quote made famous in Full Metal Jacket. It's actually the Riflemen's Creed. "This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

There are many Gunny's, but this one was OURS. And, we will honor his memory with hope and kindness. Please support your men and women in uniform. That's what he wanted most of all.

Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.

Very sad news. I enjoyed the characters he played in so many movies. My favorite role of his is actually in Saving Silverman which is kind of odd because it’s a very different movie than what I knew him for before that. Maybe that’s why I liked him so much in it. I laughed so hard at that movie and have watched it many times over. I shall watch that movie tonight.

Just saw this on the news, another good one gone. Seems we keep losing the good ones, while the worthless ones keep breathing.

He was heavily involved with troop morale, he did several morale trips to the AOR to visit with them/us. Didn't matter if you were a Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Airman or Coastie he treated us all with equal respect. He was a man that earned respect, not one that expected it.

God Speed and Semper Fidelis Gunny, you've done your duty with Honor and Dignity!

Oh fuck. I actually liked him, couldn't figure out how he managed to stand working with the Hollywood shitheads for so long without killing a few.

He will be missed. He was a funny guy, a great supporter of the military, and an advocate for all shooting sports. R.I.P. Gunny; you will be missed. :b sad:

It was my Birthday Sunday and I turned 74, I believe Gunny was 74 too. I was having a great weekend on Saturday going to a gunshow with 2 buddies and finding a 5 round SVT mag for a song. Joe texted me the bad news and the whole weekend was shot. Don't think I ever had occasion to meet anybody in my life who brought me more enjoyment or made me laugh harder. Maybe some of the old cast of MASH came close but Gunny was one of a kind! There isn't a replacement in sight and I doubt there ever will be IMHO. All I can say is RIP Gunny and I sure will miss you! Bill

PS maybe the next time that pretty little nurse wants to give me the pneumonia shot at the VA I will get it, huh?
