My first Mosin

Post by Asherah18 »

Hi, I recently paid to much for what I have a feeling is a fake Tula 1944 sniper. The short story of this purchase ...

Had been reading up in the Mosin Snipers to find my frst. I recently had the opportunity to look at two, I had put some money to hold one while I looked at the other. One was a Tula, the other a Izhevsk, well the first place got their nose out of joint and said I bought it. The Izhevsk was less, but looked more legit, and sold that same day.

Below are the pics. Of all the markings I could find. Thoughts. ?
The only place I have not been able to verify is behind the scope bracket as even with the screws out, and using a plastic wedge I could not get the bracked to release off the pins. So I will be trying some other methods to see if there is anything behind it..

Looks like a nice Tulsky (one of the last sniper import) sniper rifles. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Please don't remove the "base" from the receiver. It is not needed and could give you a lot of trouble. Removing the scope bracket from the base is far enough. No need go further. No more info past that point.

It's even marked like a typical Tula sniper with no scope markings on the left side of the barrel shank. Izhevsk snipers did have that on the first snipers, but not on the Tulas. So it looks more like the first exports.

Got their nose out of joint because you had a legitimate question about a purchase? They should have explained what their research process had been in determining the legitimacy of the rifles heritage. That would have retained a customer for future purchases rather than alienated one. After decades in this game I can say with absolute authority that the gun trade is almost as top heavy with assholes as the used car trade. I don't know why this is other that maybe guns tend to attract a lot of wannabees, and this type of personality tends to like being a know it all who can't handle anyone questioning their knowledge. Yes, I know exactly the type who got pissed when you asked a question. In the future if you get a vibe in a gunshop that they think you are a waste of time and an idiot, walk out, find someplace else. You may find a shop populated by real salesmen who don't know jack about guns, but at least they are not treating you like crap because your the money, and a real salesman never treats the money like crap. In such places it's up to know to do your homework, know what it is, and what it's worth before buying. Sounds like you may have bought this rifle without having much knowledge about them first, dangerous to the wallet, in this case you got lucky

Thanks, yeah I looked at as much info as I could online. But with no one locally I know to talk to on these, I did my best on the reasearch.. I was pretty sceptical with the bolt and the scope base cut out cut out, after seeing so many prestine pictures of examples. Here are the remainder of the pics I had taken

Been through refurbishment a couple times.

The only thing I am seeing that raises some concerns in my mind about authenticity is the cutting out of the stock around the scope mount base. The edges of the cuts look awfully crisp and clean, and also like they were done AFTER the stock was finished. I could be wrong...there are a lot of people here who know more about the sniper rifles than I do....but that is just what I see.

That waa one of my concerns too. But the fact that thwre are no numbers on the wood. It is possible the stock was changed at some point in it's life if the oroginal was damaged? One could easily just move everything over couldn't theyv

I wouldn't be too concerned over the stock, except be sure no shims fall out that would affect accuracy. Nice one

Let's just say I'd be happy with either of those rifles. Nothing to be sad about there. I really want a PU sniper someday, but I'm 23 and my monthly student loan payment for the next 10 years is just about the price of a PU, so it's not going to happen any time soon.
