New Mosin owner

Post by Ktklobe »

Hey everyone. First time Mosin owner. Ive been trying to find some basic i formation over this weapon. I see the import marks, and a struck serial number? Can this be a miss stamp on the import? I'll attach some pics, shes no beauty queen, but original is what is what im hoping for. I know there's not a lot of $ in this and im okay with that. If i can learn a little history ill be happy. I've found it's Russian, and all numbers match. Thanks for any pointers and help here.

If someone can help me figure out how to attach images, that would be great.....thanks again

Downsize them to 640x480 before trying to load them to the board.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I’ll give that a go. I’m guessing I’ll need to paste them in between the [img] tags?

Thanks

It's easier than that. Make sure you are in "Full Editor & Preview" and you can just drop the image in this text box.

Okay, while numbers are ‘matching’, I believe they have been forced matched(I believe) as they are not aloha numeric... I don’t believe there’s anything special about this one, but man I want some history behind her.

Well all of the pics didn’t post... barring ten posts, I’ll retake and work on sizing.

How about some overall pics of the entire rifle, a good shot of the markings, and do you see any round discolored spots under the bluing on the side of the receiver?

Yes, we are going to need more pictures of this rifle. It has some very interesting traits that need to be investigating. You might have something a little special.

Resizing photos seems to be above my limited technological ability....now that we’re all on the same page that a 3rd grader is smarter then me here....(hopefully this works)...if not... freeridebikes1@gmail.com is a solid email for me. If someone can reach out, I’ll send some pics..

These are all of the marking I can find. I know the sling was added. I don’t notice any discoloration in the bluing.

You are taking a lot of pictures but they are not clearly showing us what we need to see. We are seeing some interesting things on this rifle that may be a big deal, but we need specific pictures to be sure of it. We tend to be conservative here and not guess about what a rifle may be without making sure.

Please include these pictures of your rifle:

Top of barrel shank. These markings say a lot:

Inside of receiver, bolt open, of the side opposite the closed bolt handle (shooter's side for a right-hand shooter). We are looking for the presense of plugged holes like in this photo:

Side profile of the rifle on the side opposite of the closed bolt handle (shooter's side for RHD shooter). We are looking for any repairs done to the top edge of the stock roughly where the scope mount is in this photo:

Your rifle started life as a sniper rifle. You can see the plugged scope mount holes. The struck out number on the left side would have matched a scope. These are not rare, but are perhaps a bit more interesting than a standard rifle. Good first one.

What we call an "ex-sniper". Once was a sniper and was converted back to a standard M91/30. Izhevsk.

Interesting year. 1947

Interesting. I’m not going to be selling this, and I’m sure there isn’t any real money in this. Is it worthwhile to refinish the stock? While I like the historical aspect, is this something that’s typically frowned upon? I wish I could find the service records, that would be amazing.

Don't refinish it. You will completely tank the value.

Yeah, altering it in any way will hurt the value of the rifle as it stands.

If you alter it, it will be worth the sum of the parts only.
