Got out shooting today

Post by entropy »

Red wanted to sight in his AR after putting the scope on, so we went up to the range, and I re-zero'd the AR I got in trade from Cam while he sighted in. I used the same round I developed for both the AR and the Savage Axis, which Cam now has. (55 gr. V-Max, or Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint, 25.8 gr. BL-C(2), CCI 400 primer, mixed brass, in case anyone is interested) It shoots nice tight groups in the Savage, a little looser in the AR.

Red had a little trouble wrapping his brain around the fact that if one click is 1/4" at 100 yards, FOUR clicks are 1/4" at 25 yards, but he listened to me and got on zero quickly. Then he tried 100 yards, and was a bit high (more so than I thought it would be!) but he got it zeroed in 10 rounds and set the turret dial to zero. Then he cut loose with the rest of his rounds, and kept them all in about 6". I pronounced him ready for deer with his AR, but told him to work on the offhand shooting.

I wish I'd have shot this group offhand, but it was benched:

The high one is Cam's zero, the low I overcompensated on the clicks, the 3 in the bull are the zero. Bull is 1.5". (NFAA target, I had them in the truck, leftover from 4-H Archery) Not as precise as the Savage, but it'll get venison. I then shot some offhand, and realized I need to do more of that! :)

This is Red trying to see his target at 100 yards with some binoculars:

He's added some attachments to the Oracle, the forend is new, and the scope he got for $12.50 (That one and a 3-9 Tasco for $25) from a co-worker. Added a laser/light I bought for my AK, but took it off. And a Magpul AFG(Angled Fore Grip) 2, I will be getting one of those .

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Father and son with a couple of rifles at the range is as good as it gets. I went Tuesday but my son was working. I sent him some pictures to peak his interest for a range trip together soon. I sure am liking my AR15. These are really affordable nowadays. For how long I don't know.

I've got cheap scopes on all of mine, from .22's to the. 50 blackpowder rifle. They all work fine in all temps that I've had them out in from freezing to 100+
