My first M27

Post by tailgunner67 »

Well, as I fall further down the Finnish rifle rabbit hole, I have attained my first M27. Very few of these were produced in 1937. The stock, hardware, and cleaning rod are like new and possibly added after the war. The rifling in the bore is faint but still visible. I can assume this rifle saw some action in the Winter War or the Continuation war. All in all it is a very cool addition to my collection. I realize I still have a lot to learn about Finns so if anyone else has more information please feel free to share.

Congratulations on the M27! That one looks real nice, and the rarity is cool too! :Drool1: Hopefully the bore cleans up for you.

My first Mosin was an M27, and now I have four of them. I do have a particular fondness for the Finnish Mosins.

Watch the published serial number list(s). There are anomalies.

Well, it appears that my new M27 also has a very early receiver. Not markings on the tang though. Good mixture of makers marks on it.

That's an odd M27 you have there. Not in the proper serial number series at all. Almost like it was a M91 barrel turned down into a M27. If so, really unusual.

Nice rifle! Hopefully the bore will improve with hot cleaning after shooting. That is an early receiver for sure with the hole and screw on it. Look real close at the edges of the tang for maybe Chatellerault markings, even maybe on the top of the tang too. They will be single markings like maybe a C in a circle or sub contractor markings too. Does the bolt have wings on it? Many of the older still usable receivers were redone before storage after the wars so they can have pristine stocks and accoutrements on them. Congrats! Now get it to the range and see if that bore will shoot clean via the hot method of cleaning. You might be pleasantly surprised at the results. The muzzle end will slowly give up the area between the rifling marks and the rifling will get more prominent and work much better too. It will clean forward from the chamber slowly as you cycle cleanings and shooting till you are surprised by what you end up with! Good Luck and be patient! Bill :D
