Carlos Hathcock

Post by Rowdy1 »

For those of you who don't know the name his was a Marine legendary sniper with 93 kills. I was watching a sniper special and the Vietnamese sent a sniper to take him out. That sniper had a Mosin Nagant sniper rifle with a PU scope. Hatchcock killed him with a shot that went through the scope into his eye and took part of his head off. If the rifles we have could talk we'd hear amazing stories.

I've seen many specials on TV about the shot through the sniper scope. Even some where people are testing it including the MythBusters. They did a thorough job and even shot at what appeared to be a correct PU scope with no luck. Mind you I'm not saying it didnt happen. I think good skills and a bit of luck can make anything one in a million happen.

I read Carlos Hathcock's bio a few years ago. There were a lot of outstanding feats that I remember, but I do not recall that incident.

His spotter was there to witness it and the rifle came back to the camp with them. It was later stolen and could very well be in the states now.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

You think these shows would mention that but then their point of testing would be...pointless haha.

I'm a sniper too. I made a 175 yd. kill shot at a deer with my .50 cal. sidelock, launched a .325 grain scud missile at it's ribcage and hit it in the back of the head. Some amount of luck may have been a factor, but there was windspeed, degree of curvature, vision depreciation, trigger finger age, alcoholism, urgency from being on posted land, many factors involved.

The book Marine Sniper about Gunny Hathcock is an amazing read highly recommend it. The chapters about the Apache and stalking the General are riveting.

Try these:

Red Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Joseph Pilyushin (Soviet)

Sniper Ace: From the Eastern Front to Siberia

Sniper on the Eastern Front (Sepp Allerberger) One hard-hearted SOB

All of these are available on Amazon and Kindel. All of them are great reads.

I’ve worked with two Gunnery Sergeants over the years in the oilfield. The stories are unbelievable and absolutely nothing got them rattled except stupidity. One was a Vietnam Vet the other was in it throughout the ‘80s early ‘90s and saw more countries than the government will admit. One thing that stuck with me was the hand/eye coordination and the dexterity to do small things. I guess it just came with the previous job.

Fire enough shots and anything can happen. On large battlefields folks find bullets that impacted each other head-on and fused together. That would be a hard test to replicate, but it happens.

If my memory serves me right Carlos had a 50 cal rigged up to use as a sniper rifle. I think it had a Redfield mounted on it. He used it in the rice paddies. He died way too young. +dhic

They originally tried it with a modern scope and it didn't work but I do believe when they tried it with a period correct scope it did actually work. Took several shots but hey you only need to be lucky once in that case.
