M28 Rear Sight Leaf Question

Post by TnBuckeye »

Having recently bought a M28 with a rear sight leaf missing one of the buttons on the slider, I decided to also buy one of the M28 sights advertised on Liberty Tree and to install it while also keeping the original.

I am curious about what I received from LT however. See below, original sight on the right, LT sight on the left...

Is the one from LT, on the left, actually a M28 sight? I THINK so because the notch is a U not a V, and because it does not have the fingers or ears on the slider that a M27 would have, but I am not certain. The horizontal screws have me confused...

Thanks!

The new sight from LT looks to be from a M27. Maybe someone used a small file to open up the V notch for a little better sight picture. I would call LT....they have always had excellent customer service. Denny

Here is a pic from Palokangas Vol.II Pg. 51. It shows how the M28 mounting screws are behind and not front mounted. The pic also shows the cool adjustable version that wasn't widely used.

Denny I think it could be a M27 rear sight leaf as you say. In further reading I ran across a reference to some early M27 sights having a U shaped notch rather than the V.

But it seems odd that this one also doesn’t have the legs that extend down onto the sight base that M27 sights are supposed to have.

I will keep reading but yes if it comes down to it I will just contact LT for help/resolution. I have had only good experiences with them in the past.

This question has come up before with these parts from LT, and there were other suggestions but no answer as I recall

* The M27 sliders were removed and replaced with M28/Imperial

* Some M24's have a similar leaf and slider assembly

* Alien replacement? :)

I will rule out Alien influences as it doesn’t glow in the dark!!!

Too bad it doesn't glow as it would make a great night sight :D I'm thinking it might be a M24 sight. In 1926 the CG began a more complete overhaul of the rifle as they fitted a the new SIG or Böhler-stahl barrel. They changed the right rear sight scale to metric, added a higher front sight, added the spring to the trigger, and stocks were patched polished and lacquered. They also added a rear sight notch plate . If you research M-24 pics you will see plenty of that show a very similar leaf and slider setup like your recent purchase. Maybe that's what these are......Denny

I think I would rob the button off the new one and repair the original with it.

I am considering that for sure. Curious how tedious it would be.

Denny I think is correct about it being a M24 part. Several of the photos here look like it...

I just looked at my M24 and M27 and it is not like either of them. My M24 has a standard M91 sight, and the M27 has screws like that, but it has the legs underneath. I think I would use that part to repair the original as was suggested. Good luck.
