Question about ammo

Post by WW1-WW2rifleman »

I know this is probably a dumb question but I’m new to firearms so I beg for mercy here. I was watching a video on YouTube channel IV8888 about the 7.62 confusion. Eric was saying that even though the 7.5 French round is called 7.5x54 that the width is actually 7.62. Is that actually true and if so could the French ammo be used in the Mosin-Nagant?

Do not use any cartridge in a Mosin Nagant other than the 7.62x54r it is designed to use.

Bullets are a different story. The cartridge is not. There are other bullets that can be loaded into a 7.62x54r cartridge and work nicely but you always use the right cartridge. This is not the kind of stuff you fool around with unless you are absolutely certain of what you are doing. It's very dangerous if you get it wrong.
I'm just here for the free coffee mug and tee shirt. :vcool:

Yeah, I’m not much of a lever action guy so I never had any interest in the 30-30. Thanks for the information on the 7.5 though. I like WW1 stuff the most and wanted to make sure

Yeah, I know it’s dangerous to do if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s why I was asking. Good to know though thanks. If I get a Mosin and reload for it I’ll keep it in mind about being able to use different bullets.

I'm not sure about the French round, but when reloading the same bullets will fit the 7.62x54R, the. 303 British, even the 7.5 Jap round. While the bullets are the same, the cases are not. So you already know now, but never attempt to shoot anything in a firearm it was not designed for.

IV8888 can confuse people. Even the use of multiple bullets as indicated above could be problematic. I'm a big proponent of slugging the barrels of any rifle you wish to load for. Mosin bores can be from .310 to .315. Carcano 6.5mm can be very problematic as well. Match the bullet to the bore with appropriate clearance for the projectile. I'd never mess with the cartridge. Not that it's not possible. I just don't feel comfortable going there unless I was faced with an off the wall round. But, I haven't experienced that yet.
