I've been wanting a Spanish Civil War M91 for quite some time, but haven't seen too many pop up with confirmed Spanish traits. However, I just won this example in an online auction. It's a New England Westinghouse M91 with a very nice "Made in USSR" mark stamped on the top of the receiver. Just what I was looking for! Has some wire sling swivels as well, and a big burn mark on the rear of the stock. Who knows if that's from it's service in Spain or since it entered the US, but a neat feature in any case. Also looks to have a few original matching parts still on it.
The base price I paid was very reasonable, but the auction fees will probably make it quite a bit more. Either way I'm glad to have one in the Spanish Civil War collection now! Here are the auction photos. I'll post more once I have it in hand.
Interesting burn mark on the stock, has to be a story there. Cool find .
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

The rifle came in today and I am very please with my first SCW M91. Managed to take a few photos before the sun went down. I had an extra M91 cleaning rod, so I added it on. Sling hangers are of a typical Spanish style and the "Made is USSR" helps confirm the origin. Looks like a small set of nails were used to hold in the sling slot escutcheon on the front of the rifle. The floor plate is matching, but Tula marked.
The burn on the buttstock is fairly evenly covered on both sides. Who knows when or how that managed to happen. Someone also carved the initials "FB" prior to the burn.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Pitter54,
I run a website on the topic. Hopefully this will help explain it. In short, the "Made in USSR/URRS" mark is a type of import mark that has only been found on Mosin Nagants imported from Spain in the 50's and 60's by Sam Cummings. As far as we know, Finn imported rifles from the era do not have a similar mark.
