A trophy from the Orient

Post by Jimmy Joe Meeker »

Hello all :wave.gif:
I recently bought a few rifles from my 80 something year old neighbor, a 91/30 Mosin, a Meriden model 10 and this wonderful type 99 Arisaka. From some research I did the Arisaka appears to have been made by the Toyo Kogyo arsenal and is part of the 32nd series which was approximately made in 1943. Also, if I surmise correctly the lines in the mum were created by the bayonet of the Japanese soldier who knew that he didn't have long for this world. But if I may ask, where could I find the proper cleaning rod and what would be a fair market value be for the rifle? I bought it and the other two rifles for what I consider a really low price but I just don't know and I want to make sure I'm not stealing them from him because he is a friend before all else. Especially since he said he had more rifles to sell me later.

Hopefully the pictures aren't too abysmal and you all enjoy the pictures. One last thing, does anyone here know much about old Remington rolling block rifles, particularly those used by the Spanish and Cubans loyal to Spain during the Spanish-American war?
TIA, Jimmy

Rolling blocks are not uncommon, they were used by many countries before 1900 from the middle east to South America, and so on. Spain's would be in .43 Spanish and the typical rolling block musket style. What did you want to know about them? As for the price of the Arisaka, $400 would be my current guess for a rifle in nice condition with a battle defaced mum. Prices could have gone higher since I checked, Numrich Arms may have the cleaning rod.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

A normal Type99 is still in the 300 dollar range. Your stock appears to have been refinished. Some guys don't care but some collectors won't be interested, some will but will consider the value lower.

Lots of original and repo cleaning rods on eBay and other milsurp sites. As far as price I would check online sites they will give you a range of prices. The guns with a complete mum always are more. I have four. Paid $750 for the all matching one with dust cover, aircraft rear sight and monopod. Pricing seems to vary depending where you live if you are buying locally.
