Tested a new .45acp load today.

Post by websterz »

I'm planning to deer hunt with my 1911 this fall so I worked up a load specifically for that purpose. A 230 grain XTP hollow point over 5.5 grains of TiteGroup. 30 rounds through my 5" 1911a1 left my whole arm sore!! The primers and brass looked good and the rounds are very accurate out to 25 yards. This is the longest shot I'll take with a pistol, and at that distance they'll knock a deer into the next county!!

Sounds fun. I watched a show a few years back where they were stalking up close to shoot with a 10mm. Interesting with the FPV of the GoPro strapped to them. I don't remember the show though....

Well, it's no wonder they pounded the crap out of me. Hodgdon recommends a maximum load of 4.8 grains of TiteGroup. My 5.5 grain loads are effectively +p+. The brass and primers look great, no signs of overpressure. A thorough examination of the pistol shows nothing out of the ordinary. I won't feed it a steady diet of the hot loads, but I will save the last twelve of them for hunting. In the future I'll download them to 5.0 grains which is safely in +p range. They'll make great defensive loads!
