Oddball M91

Post by Riva9999 »

Howdy,

Just unpacked a Finn M91 described as incomplete. While yes it has parts missing it seems to be the most mongrel of any Mosin-type yet. 1942 SA B marked barrel, round 1937 Izhevsk receiver, Mix of Tula and Sestroyetsk bolt parts, Ses. trigger guard, and half of a KA3-marked Konovalov rear sight (missing slider). And a well-dented 3-piece Finn stock to boot, with no sling hangers. So... anybody know a good source for M1891 Finn parts? Looking for the sight slider, front sight blade, front type 2 barrel band and handguard. All else looking good even the neat trigger mechanism. Thanks! I'll post pics after she gets cleaned up. Might take a while.

Springfieldsporters has Finnish M91 rear sights available they list different types, there is one on page 1 and three on page 4, that I noticed. Libertytreecollectors might have some of the other parts also.

You can usually find your barrel bands on ebay. If you run into a brick wall with your search, contact me, I think I have a pair around somewhere, but as I remember they are well worn.

M91 handguards are a pain to find, and seem to be rare as hens-teeth, and normally run in the $100.00 plus range when you do find one. So it's not uncommon from what I've been told for M91's to be missing them.

Thanks everyone. Upon cleaning it up I found the bore is Perfect. Also has a cool trigger mechanism I haven't seen before, the trigger and bolt stop are connected via a pin, resulting in a 2 stage trigger. Small problem though: it will close with no ammo but will not close on a Go gauge. Any ideas on that? I tried the sticky bolt trick of very gently stoning the outer edge of the bolt head but it didn't help. The gauge seems to sit flat on the bolt face so I'm stumped. Could try another bolt head I suppose. And since I have the regular notch on the rear sight (no slider) if I push a blade on the front I could shoot it, handguard or no :)

Uh oh, are round receivers on these things super-rare? Thanks folks for the parts references, some parts on the way but I'll have to find more (front band, front sling hanger and handguard- maybe!).

Boy, just about all of them - Foggy memory says there might be a VKT and or a Tikka round receivered M91 or two out there, but I am unsure.

Wow, thanks Pahtu. Once I figure out how to convert my photos to a compatible format I'll post. FYI Mine looks a lot like that minus the D. And mine seems to have a Russian rear sight.

Actually has a really nice bore and muzzle condition. And not sure why but it has a Cossack rear sight base.

Riva9999, it sounds like you are newer to Mosins. The majority of Mosins have parts from various arsenals--this is not uncommon. It is extremely common. From what I know, the B barrel Mosins (which is what you have) were assembled post war; hence the reason your bore is in very good shape. Your stock looks fine (at least the parts I can see). If you find a rear slider for your rear sight, they are a little tricky to install, but it is easy once you understand how the slider works. There are online photographs of the slider assembly. You'll probably fare better buying a rear sight with the slider attached. Some are flattened and some are curved. I think the flatter ones were used on rear sight bases which had the curve removed in the graduations.

Also, if you plan on installing a new rear sight, you'll need padded clamps (found at Wal-Mart or hardware stores) and a punch set. You should remove the barrel from the stock, clamp the rear sight to relieve the spring tension, punch out the pin, install the new sight (use the clamps to keep the sight in place).

Thanks all. I already picked up a Tula ladder and slider but I haven't installed it yet. I'm not new to Mosins but I was surprised to see the mix on a Finn one, but it's still a neat piece. I'm actually thinking of selling it, since it's kind of the oddball of the collection. The round receiver and B barrel might be of interest to folks on this forum due to rarity, so if anyone is interested let's PM. If no bites I'll list her on GunBroker if I can find a comparable one to price it with. Somehow I think $30,000 is probably a bit too high LOL

You do know the Finland (Finns) never made:
1) Receivers, either round or "hex"
2) Bolts ( a very few rear part of the bolts were made by them)
3) Butt plates
4) Trigger guard (magazines) (altered a few sometimes)

They did make: (but not all of them)
1) Barrels
2) Stocks
3) Sights for the M28/30 and M39's (maybe some others)
4) Bands
5) Caps
6) Sling slot plates

I know I'm missing some things!!!

Most of there rifles were made from "Russian parts". Most were a mix of these parts and theirs. All Finns can be expected to be a mix of parts. Especially the receiver and bolts. I'm not sure why you are "surprised" that that rifle is a mix of parts? It's a Finn!

They bought anything they could from other countries like Germany. Germany sold them captured Russian rifles. So did others.

Lets see if I can remember all the variations of Finn rifles and where they came from......

1) Rifles that were in Finland when the wars started with Russia. (rifles Russia set them up with before the wars)
and would have strictly Russian markings on them (later would have SA added)

2) Rifles captured from Russia (Commonly called "Russian captures") Branded with their marks (SA) and re-issued to their troops.

3) Rifles made from parts they called their own, but most of the parts like the receivers and bolts were off older Russian rifles. (they were called "Finish made" rifles ....but...).

4) Rifles they bought from other countries (and parts) like Germany. Had some barrels made by other countries too).
A lot of these were used as parts to build their rifles with.

Hell, I'm missing something, I know it!! :chuckles:
