Storing "too many" in the safe

Post by Riva9999 »

Hi folks,

Due to space restrictions I may be forced to start putting the rifles in full length socks and gently leaning them on one another. I plan to safety pin a tag on each indicating what they are so I don't have to hunt blindly. My question: has anyone else done this and do they protect well enough to stop scuffs? How about corrosion, any issue with then being in there if they stay dry? Thank you

Get some bore stores silicone impregnated soft gun storage cases, Cabelas has them in various sizes, they will retard rust and help protect the rifle in crowded conditions.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I have mine stacked in an old metal wardrobe, with so many spam cans in the bottom it can't be moved. I put a heavy hasp on it and a Master lock that is bolt cutter proof. There is so much gun oil and silicone in there that rust dies when you put it in there  I've got to thin that thing out before I hurt myself getting a rifle out. The top is perfect for pistols and odd ammo. It's a hillbilly thing.

I got a kid works for me who can pop a master lock in less than 30 seconds. Wise ass proved it to me by popping the lock on my barn faster than I could find the key in my pocket. I upgraded the lock and hasp after that, little shit will need a torch to open it now. Bolt cutter proof don't mean shit either, all you need is a big enough bolt cutter, and I got that. High security locks, something like this for starters

JYD has a great view of locks and stuff and I agree with most of his posts and will only add the fact that locks and such are for honest people. Crooks can always find a way around them.

One thing I have found about overloading safes is you can take the amount of guns past the point where a certain size Golden Rod will eliminate moisture and you will end up with rust forming. I think it has something to do with the actual density or number of the rifles in the safe. Bill :o

I stop putting in rifles in a safe when I can no longer get a grip with a crowbar on the other rifles to pry open a space. But I am in California where crowding firearms in a safe is not a problem.

I think a "golden Rod" is highly dependent on "where you live". Out here in Norther California I don't have to run one in the safes. I would imagine in the "Virginia's" that would be a big problem. We are in a very low humidity area. It is hard to give advice (sometimes) because humidity is a "local" thing. Some places like Virginia (almost any where in the South) will eat your rifles alive if you don't protect them.

Most people don't know that California is really a "desert" if you take away all the water is directs into the valleys from the mountains. We are talking Northern California here. The South steal all their water from us and all the States around us!

If moisture is a problem, toss a few of those little silicone packs in there, or a small cup of calcium chloride.......where it won't get spilled.

The hell with it, golden rod? Sounds like a 70's porno star, desiccant pack's? Poison for pets and little kids. Just send me all the guns, I have lots of cosmoline, bags and room out in the barn, I will take care of them for you, every few years I will take them out and fire them to be sure they still work. Better send me the ammo also.

You old Cosmoline Dog! You ain't getting my toys as only I get to play with them. Truthfully I have only used RIG and any other greases maybe a few times. Everything is slathered in Balistoll and ready to be wiped and go to the range at anytime for fun. Those little golden rods do a great job and then when you add in an air-conditioned shop with some 2 pound bags of desiccant I am mostly bullet proof in the safes or shop. I did once how ever overload a safe and the single small golden rod was not enough to handle it. I saw the tell tale spots and spider webs of corrosion starting to form and upped the size of the rod and stopped her dead. I think one thing that helps me is stuff moves around a lot in the shop so I look at stuff often as the pieces are replaced or moved on to others care. Bill ;mywink;

Put them in a silicone sock (Walmart has them). Then see how many you can get in the safe. One bore up, one bore down; repeat. It's reasonably dry here so I haven't had trouble with rust. Main problem is the gun I want is always in the back. Also makes you realize how long those Mosins are especially the M91. Still may need a second safe.

Easy to do when you have 10-20 rifles to clean monthly. Not so easy once you reach 50, and a full time job once you pass 100, and you need a full staff once you pass 200.

:chuckles: I have 6 overflowing safes, just working 7 days a week it would take over a month to do that! The stuff I use on them is Balistoll and it is supplemented with Golden rods, air conditioned room, large desiccant bags, and usage often if possible. They get gone through about once a year for all the year plus usage. It has worked for 15 or 25 years now and I only had one time that things went bad when a Golden rod got unplugged when a safe was emptied and moved. They were in a northeast cellar that had minimal heat and I noticed something after about a week of sitting, the butt plates were starting to color and I searched the reason for it and found unplugged wires. When safes are working right you will notice no difference at all in the rifles other than when you open the safe all them rifles say I thought you would never come back, we need exercise you know! Bill

I saw that one, you will have to rip open the roof and hire a crane to lower it into the house onto a heavily reinforced floor. Just think of the weight of 80 long guns by themselves, and you know you are going to stuff at least 90 in there at some point.

My brother got a sweet deal on a huge Fort Knox safe that has to be a 60 gun model. It was a divorce sale for cents on the dollar. Problem was it would not fit through the door so he had it put in the garage. Then he moved a few years ago and removed the garage door and moved it in the house then built in the wall so the safe won't be going anywhere unless a wall it torn down.

I've got to introduce you to the wife of the guy I bought most of my safes from. They have these little Teflon pads they put the safe on and that little girl about crushed me and her husband on a wall with only her pushing the safe and it was the 100+ gun one I got. Her daughter wrestled the boys in high school and could have gotten a college scholarship if she applied. She is going to Law School I think now? Can't remember, she's a pretty little thing too!

Those socks even though they are silicone impregnated will wick moisture out of the air so be careful or you will cause rust with them. Don't set them in snow or water with a gun inside or it will wick the moisture out of that too. I have seen two cases of damage from just that where guns were stored in a cellar or attic. Bill
