Questions About P38

Post by TnBuckeye »

I am new to p38s and military handguns in general so this may be a really basic question. But I can't find anything definitive in my Googling so far so here goes...

Looking at a 1943 Mauser p38. Numbers appear to match on the slide, frame, barrel. Markings on the left look right based on the examples I have seen online particularly at p38guns.com. No import mark on it either.

On the right however I see no markings at all. I can't tell for certain but would guess they have been scrubbed at some point. Is this fairly common with these? I know with other milsurps it would not be unusual to find scrubbed or struck markings if an item was captured.

If it is normal would this have a major affect on price? I don't want to insult the seller with a stupid low ball offer but also don't want to get taken.

I am not asking for a firm price quote per se on it, just looking for some p38 education from those more familiar.

Thanks!

Try applying a magnet to the frame. I've never heard of a scrubed P38? If it turns out to be a WWII gun, please do some research before shooting it! WWII P38s slide have been known to break even durring WWII! I personally wouldn't shoot mine untill I bought a P1 slide and locking block and exchange them.
