Yugo M48

Post by Sonny »

Mailman (lady) dropped this off at the door this morning.

A Yugo M48 Mauser and good grief was it ever covered in cosmoline.

Spent about two hours cleaning it up but it will weep cosmoline for a good time yet.
Took it to the range and was getting pretty good groups with it but about 8 inches high. This was with Hornady custom 196gr softpoints.I might have to try different brands to see what it likes best
Anyway I love the blond stock on it and the metal looks good too.

Don't know..How do you tell?

oops...nevermind.I had a good look and some numbers were force matched so it's a refurb but it still looks good.

Not a hundred percent sure, I wouldn't want to lead you in the wrong direction. I'm sure someone else can chime in if there's anyway to tell, I don't know how probable it can be. Nonetheless the rifle looks absolutly beautiful! Nice buy

The're good shooters, but the action on mine was like shifting a dump truck. Spoiled by Mosins.

Nice looking rifle, bad news it isn't cosmoline, it's grease. Cosmoline is our stuff, it's a wax like protectant that is applied hot and dries to a slightly sticky coat, you wash it off with rags and diesel fuel. As it doesn't absorb that deep the weeping is kept to a minimum. Grease on the other hand is jelled oil and it absorbs excellently into wood and will seep out for the next 20 years :) The commies were cheap bastards.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Nice buy Sonny, I bought one from the shop I work at and it's on the back burner to clean as it has a lot of grease also

Looks nice!

Mine (M48A) was a private seller on S&W Forum. Got lucky, as 98% of the cosmoline was cleaned off prior to getting it in hand. Just had to take down the bolt and get it out of some harder to reach spots... but A LOT easier than my Yugo M59/66A1, which came from the distributor. That took me like three months of cleaning... sitting on the floor in my office, knocking some out as I got time. So fun that I'll never do that again. [emoji23]

What's the serial number range? I'll check my book for a production year.

Beautiful rifle.  Looks like they stamped the crest off center. Haven't seen that before on one of these. Maybe, it's just my eyes.

The stamp is in the middle,I just had the rifle twisted a bit so the sun light would hit the crest better.

The receiver date puts it in 1950, the floor plate, judging it is from a M48, would be 1951.

Is there a letter before the receiver number?

Got it from Corwin Arms in Kamloops. They still have a few left.
