New to Me Romanian SKS

Post by TnBuckeye »

Now my Yugo has a cousin to keep it company! I am having trouble getting a good photo of the entire thing given the crappy weather today, but here are a few poor indoor samples.

Bolt and carrier, cover, trigger guard, and mag all stamped match. No numbers found on other internals. Stock appears to match, but also appears to have another faint set of numbers and/or some faint trench art on it. Bore looks great.

I have read that some of these came over with very worn stocks, and this one fits that description. I would be curious how that came to be as these don't seem to have served in wartime. Researching that more now!

Nice  :Drool1:

These can range in condition from almost beat to death to almost pristine, totally mismatched to totally matching(which is fairly rare), you can even find refurbs from time to time. The refurb examples I've seen look very much like a Chinese with a very light colored stock, usually it was stripped, sanded, no serial and a kind of nasty yellowish shellac, like some of the yellowish stocked GP WASR series of Aks have. I have one Romanian that had a Yugoslavian serialed bolt out of the box. Romania, a small almost broke communist nation at the time, didn't hold rifle part matching and appearance as a high priority, if they functioned, thats all they wanted. They were also usually issued, carried and beat on more than used, one internal use might have been the Romanian Revolution when they over threw Ceausescu's regime.

Thanks! Was just reading about their revolution and subsequent smaller protests and etc. Interesting stuff that I didn't know much about prior. That is one of the reasons I like this stuff, it tends to open historical doors!

I have a sweet spot for Romanians, :chuckles: they don't carry the clout other variants do, and actually, they are not as common as say Russians, Chinese or Yugoslavians. Albania can give the Romanian a run for the money in rarity, they produced their SKS longer over a period of 11-12 years, but just in lower numbers. They are the true redheaded step children of the SKS family, and usually a box of chocolates, cause you don't know what your going to get. Out of all 4 production years I have, 1 totally matches, one has a single mismatched part, all the way to absolutely nothing matches and a Yugo bolt is installed.

If you go hunt a correct sling, they do pop up from time to time randomly, but can be a joy to find.

I will definitely be looking for a correct sling. Came with a leather AK sling on it. Should it have EP numbers on internal parts like pistons and the gas tube or not necessarily?

The tube and gas piston would typically be marked, or in some cases could even be blank, I've seen them both ways. Two other parts that "could" be marked is under the rear sight leaf, and even, but not commonly, the butt plate could even have a serial etched in to it

My buddy has a gorgeous example he bought, at my urging, from a private seller at a gunshow about 15 years ago. All numbers matching in a beautiful chocolate brown stock. If it was fired it was very well cared for. He gave $150 for it

Very nice,my Romanian along with a Czech Mauser were the culprits that got me in to Milsurp collecting. Unfortunately my Romanian came to me in a plastic stock, (I didn't know better then). It now sits in an unknown SKS stock I got off ebay for 10 bucks. If anybody knows of or has an original Romanian stock let me know.

Mine was a pesky M59/66, still have it, came with a leather sling and free dirt in it. :D

As for a replacement.. these are "reportedly" Romanian, with stock hardware, but no hand guard wood. I know it's a stretch, the photo representation has the correct fish scaling for beech and coloration of a Romanian stock.

Just because rifles without slings are nude, and nudity can be obscene...

Most have the same stamp the Romanian slings do.

I just got one of the Romanian stocks Greasemonkey posted about. I also found a handguard. I should have my Romanian back in its proper clothes by next week. The stock is dirty but not chewed up.

Very nice pair you've got there TnBuckeye! I still haven't found a Romanian or Albanian in my neck of the woods. Would love to add one or both to my collection.
