AR-accurate.
Huyah. I went and shot the M-1 Garand today, first shot a 3" group 4 in the bullseye and 4 just above, at 60 yd. Then hit 8 for 8 skeet I had set against a log at 60 yd. My cuz, the AR fanatic, shoots 5 .223, hits the target once, 3 left of target 7 " and one missed completely. Those that shoot these AR's with iorn sights, what kind of group is normal for you?

Re: AR-accurate.
With an AR? Been so long since I fired one I forget. I don't remember them as being either terrible or remarkable performers, JAR's ( Just Another Rifle) Could be the problem is with cuz's particular weapon, or his skill with it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: AR-accurate.
The average AR is capable of much better accuracy than he displayed. I'd guess it is his shooting skills, but it could be some flaw with the rifle. My friends have AR's and some are very nice, others just ok. I'm more of an AK guy when it comes to the "assault rifle" category.

I have seen very accurate ones. Most likely Cuz was out of practice.

Re: AR-accurate.
My Colt 6940 could shoot the wings off of a gnat at 60 yards. It's far more capable than I am but even on my worst day with it at that distance, I'm usually 1" or less groups with irons. Stupid accurate rifle. I've seen folks at the range with the cheap $400 AR's and they can't hit squat at 25 yards. Combination of the quality of the rifle and quality of the shooter I'd say.

Re: AR-accurate.
My AR shoots a heck of a lot better than that. Granted, I practice a lot, load my own and shoot other firearms regularly as well. If the shooter is proficient, the rifle properly 'dialed in' and the ammunition accurate in that rifle, sub MOA groups are the norm. Something is wrong with that set up.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Re: AR-accurate.
I recently picked up the Ruger AR556 and took it out for the first time today. My primary focus was function check and evaluation of the 5 different mags I have acquired.
Set the target at 50 yards, using some old Ultramax 55gr remanufactured FMJ. Chosen because it's the oldest I had.
All 5 mags worked well (3 poly, PMag, IMI, Hex, 2 steel AR Stoner 20 & 30 rounders)
Groups about 4" with irons and not much effort. First time shooting an AR since leaving the Army in '93.
Aging eyes, marginal stock trigger probably doubled group size but my first impression is "good enough".

Re: AR-accurate.
I tear up shotgun clays at 200 yards with my scoped AR's all day long. With my ability with iron sights I expect 4 inch groups at 100 yards. The gun is more capable than that, but I'm the one that holds it back. With my scoped AR's I can pull off 2 inch groups easily at 100 yards. A quality free floated AR is one helluva accurate platform.

Re: AR-accurate.
My AR that I built will put ten rounds of my reloads in a 3/4" square at 100 yards, scoped. Sounds like he needs more practice or glasses perhaps.
Re: AR-accurate.
I was shooting poorly the other day and still shot under an inch at 50yrds with a stock budget rifle and irons. Cuz might need more practice lol.

Re: AR-accurate.
The stock mil-spec single stage trigger on an AR is very unforgiving too. First and best upgrade my AR's get is a Geissele SSA or G2S trigger group.

Re: AR-accurate.
I'm usually sub MOA with my .300 blackout and a no mag red dot. With irons I run around 2 inches with the same gun. My .223 18inch scoped rifle shoots around a quarter inch with good handloads or decent factory ammo. My 16 inch gun in 223 is a 3 inch gun all day, and my retro XM16E1 runs a solid 3-4.
Re: AR-accurate.
At 60 yards it shouldn't be any bigger than 1.5" group, period. Sounds like your friend got a little cocky and over-confident and couldn't have shot his way out of a wet paper bag.

Re: AR-accurate.
Good to hear, probably 40% or more of our Militia we may need someday will have these. His eyesight is getting worse, but he is still a better pistol shot than me, he's probably shot 3 times the pistol rounds I have. I've got better the past 5 yrs at 60 yrs. old. Damn glasses.
