16th birthday present

Post by miner49r »

I got my soon to be 16 year old son a 1950 refurb 'd SKS for his birthday. All in all its a cool gun with an odd stock repair at the wrist. They added a couple of crossbolts to strengthen a crack. Also the firing pin has the spring mod already done so it's good to go. The bore is great but not chromed. The gas piston is new.
Cleaned it up and took it to the range. Works like a charm and my kid is all smiles.
$219 is a steal of a deal. Image

A 1950 could have the original spring loaded pin after a refurb, it still could be the original set up, a non chrome bore was also normal that year as well. Some barrels did get replaced and upgraded to chrome, but if still in spec, they left them.

Lucky boy..

Right on and they won't be $219 for much longer.

CT in Edson still has some for $219 but most places now are $239-$259.

The bolt has the original serial number and is the nasty refurb black. As to the stock repair, this is the first time I've seen crossbolts used to repair the wrist. It's a fantastic shooter though. My kid blew 150 rounds in no time at all.
An indulgent present but he will only turn 16 once!

Very nice 16th birthday present. My grandfather bought me a Remington 870 Wingmaster shotgun when I turned 16. I still have it, and it's one of my favorite guns in my safe.

You're treating you kids good! Very nice looking SKS. My Russian is a 1950 as well and it too came with the firing pin spring. Not needed but nice to know it's less likely to burst out all 10 rounds when I pull the trigger. Not that it wouldn't be fun but the RSO's tend to frown upon that..

You couldn't have bought a better present with that money. Keep the bolt black....they shoot better that way :vcool:

Yup I am a canuckistanian.
A couple of interesting things about the sks: the wrist repair is a little unusual and the serial number on the magazine is odd. I do like the original serial number - very Russian. ImageImageImageImage

I wouldn't say it was over indulgent. I know a guy, a doctor in Dallas, that just bought his twin kids matching BMW's for their 16th birthday. Talk about ridiculous. I guess at that stage in the life of a successful professional you have to go big to keep up the status quo. I'd rather see the joy of a 16 year old at the range shooting. Good job dad.
