What is the value of a M38
I am going to be selling my M38. It's a 1942 with the M44 stock. All original, all matching numbers, no rust or pitting, good bore but counterbored and it has the import markings on it. Bluing is still good and action on it is still tight. What price range should I put it up for sale locally here in Utah or what would it go for on gunbroker.

A refurb M38 common year? $275-$350
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I got mine off GunBoards for $300, shipped. Same as you described, but 1943. Rough manufacturing, but looks and functions great.

Sometimes it takes time to sell something, weeks, months, even years.

Selling any Mosin Nagant locally is really just a shot in the dark, some half arse gun enthusiast still think the Mosin Nagant is a $75 rifle. If I ever were to sell one I would go with Gunbroker or forum traders, you gotta reach the Mosin educated. On the other hand if you're buying from the (Mosin un-educated)... well that can be a good thing.billybob123 wrote:OK thanks. Oh and I think your M38 should bring $275plus, seems common refurb 91/30's are closing in on $250.

I have no feel for today's market. The M38's were thin on the ground before all this madness started with $250.00 91/30s.

I don't get the carbine market right now. 91/30s selling for 250-300 and carbines sit at 250. They just haven't seemed to move up at all. But I'm guessing in time they will. If I saw a M38 south of 300 I'd be on it.

Carbines are always popular on the US surplus market, even long carbines like the M38/M44 ( as opposed to the short German G33/40)

Locally, for years, not very many people care or want Mosin Nagants, if they do show interest.....they want to seriously low ball you.

I do not always fire a rifle, but when I do....it is a Mosin I choose.....
Re: What is the value of a M38
Take a look at GunBroker Completed Items under advance search and search on Mosin M38 or Mosin M-38. Check the results for the guns that have sold recently (usually at the bottom if multiple pages). This will give you an idea what it's value is. A phenomenon I have seen recently is the large number of newbies who are pay top dollar for surplus rifles now. You could also take the pricing advice of those here and list your carbine in the WTS section here. $300 is fair for a nice M-38 in an M-44 stock. Or, stick it out on GunBroker for a $250 starting price or lower and let the bidders fight over it. You might be surprised what you get for it. Of course, you could get less, as well. But, I've found that the lower the initial starting price, the more people will watch it. Right now there are a few out there. Watch them and see what they end up going for and wait until there are no M-38's out there before you list. You could also sling it over your shoulder and walk a gun show...

Watch GB, and a m38 that sells for over $400, use the same description, header, and pics as close as you can
Have you got pics posted on here in the for sale forum?

Just did that, took an uncommon Finn M27 & Yugo 48, just to test the local waters, found a GB member, had fun chatting with him, got a few curious inquiries about the piece, but no one was interested or knew what it was, kinda typical for local shows and shows in eastern WA as well.qz2026 wrote:You could also sling it over your shoulder and walk a gun show...

I know what you mean. I've had a bit of luck doing this and being on the other side. I spotted one of the guys I see at the guns shows all the time, with an M-39, walking around. Really nice SAKO with the matching floor plate, with the mysterious "2" on the shank and butt stock. He only wanted $300 for it. Done! And, once I was carrying around a nice M-44/M-38 (can't remember) and ran into one of our forum members and sold it for a pretty good price but fair for him. It was only later that I realized it was an MO or something like thatPahtu wrote:Just did that, took an uncommon Finn M27 & Yugo 48, just to test the local waters, found a GB member, had fun chatting with him, got a few curious inquiries about the piece, but no one was interested or knew what it was, kinda typical for local shows and shows in eastern WA as well.qz2026 wrote:You could also sling it over your shoulder and walk a gun show...

Selling right here on the forum is a great idea. Like minded good people that would give it a good home.
