So even if the rifle was perfectly fine and operational, they took it apart and mismatched the parts with others?Junk Yard Dog wrote:This is a rifle that was refurbished by the Soviets after WW2, during the process the rifles were stripped down to the last bit and the parts were refurbished and inspected with thousands of like parts, at the end of the line the barreled receivers were reassembled into rifles without regard for whatever parts might have been on it when it was new. They are all mixmasters parts wise because of this. Any era Mosin part can be found in a refurbished rifle..

In that case, I'll come up with a story that's way more creativeLongcolt44 wrote:There a 1000 reasons a stock was replaced, pick the most romantic. Your rifle may have not seen Stalingrad but there is a very good chance it does have a body or 2 on it.

Yes, that's exactly what they did, they also updated any dragoons in the mix. We did the same thing on a pretty much continuous basis with our rifles in the 20th century. From time to time batches of them were pulled from service and sent back to the arsenal for repair, big difference between how we did it and the Soviets did it is that we pulled any worn parts, including barrels, and scrapped them in favor of new parts. We never counterbored a barrel, or did a stock repair, our economic system worked well and we had money to fix things without shortcuts. This is why you don't see many US milsurps still in their original condition as first issued. We also didn't spend millions refurbishing antique bolt rifles in the atomic era, we only refurbished stuff we were sending as aid, the rest got stacked in an arsenal someplace until it was sold as scrap.geosh wrote:So even if the rifle was perfectly fine and operational, they took it apart and mismatched the parts with others?Junk Yard Dog wrote:This is a rifle that was refurbished by the Soviets after WW2, during the process the rifles were stripped down to the last bit and the parts were refurbished and inspected with thousands of like parts, at the end of the line the barreled receivers were reassembled into rifles without regard for whatever parts might have been on it when it was new. When dealing with millions of weapons in a refurbishment program that took decades to finish there is no time to try and select the one or two rifles in a pile that never fired a shot. They are just stripped down like all the rest and the barreled receiver will be inspected by whoever's job that is. If it's good then all the better, send it on for bluing.

Not if the body's were in bits with steaming entrails piled around them as would be the norm in Stalingrad
