M91 What the heck is it?

Post by TnBuckeye »

Ran across something today I had never seen before. And so of course I had to have it!
It is a m91, with Finn marks. One piece stock, apparently matching handguard, pine cone stamp on butt stock. Bolt does not match but has been renumbered multiple times including on the bolt handle. Butt numbers match the barrel.

Beyond that???

Forgive the crappy photos. I will post better ones when I get off the road this weekend.

Bulgarian pine cone stamp? Maybe a Bubba M91 that received a stock transplant from one of the Balkan M91 imports? Is that bore lined? I can't tell from the pic.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I really can't tell if it is lined or not. I am not very familiar with that personally. From the photos of what the crown looks like on a relined one, maybe?

I will get a better photo this weekend and try to zoom in. I wonder about Bubba as well. But I don't see rough looking scrub marks on the barrel and it doesn't look reblued. Maybe a normal Russian m91 scrubbed barrel put on the receiver?

It does not look like Bubba to me. My take is that it is just a Finnish odd-ball. I would like to see a good close up of the muzzle.

Also pics of the underside of the barrel shank out of the wood.

Not able to tell if it is an unmarked P series either. Possibly just the barrel shank was badly pitted and they buffed it off and renumbered it. Others are out there. I don't think it would be especially valuable, but it is collectable.

^^^ Yes, that would help to determine what it is. Also, photos of the stock and buttplate.

I will certainly report back this weekend with more and better photos. Very curious what, if anything, is marked on it below the wood.

We'll see if there is anything significant on the underside of the barrel. To me, the rifle seems odd overall. Serial number looks like a Revolution Era Izhevsk serial number. Scrubbed makers mark(odd, unless the barrel was relined), Imperial Eagle is still on receiver. AZF mark, Finn modified rear sight base. You state pinecone stamp, which is associated with rifles imported from the Balkans. But, the butt plate has a matching serial number. Just a lot of oddities.

There is an Austrian history also as shown by the AZF on the receiver.

Pic heavy!

Let see if these help any. In the photos of the muzzle, I have the unmarked m91 sitting next to my NEW Finn for comparison. Both are counterbored.

Some anecdotal comments are that the bore is in pretty good shape. It felt tight given my brief cleaning and scrubbing of it, using the same equipment, when compared to my other Finns. And the trigger feels great when dry firing. May have it at the range tomorrow to really test it out.

If it is counter bored I doubt it would be a lined P series rifle. More than likely just a Finn that was scrubbed by them maybe due to multiple confusing markings. That has happened in the past, matter of fact I think I have one in my gaggle of rifles. Come to think of it I believe it is counter bored too. Bill

Thanks Bill. That was my gut reaction as well, that it is not relined, and that what I was thinking might have been the liner at the muzzle was just an aggressive counterbore job.

The markings I am really curious about are the ones on the butt plate lower left, and a similar one on the bottom of the barrel, under the location of the rear sight. I dont recall running across those markings before online or in person.

I am excited to see how it shoots tomorrow hopefully!

I really can't see the muzzle in that pic, but the lack of a flat on the underside of the shank makes me think it is not relined. Others with p series rifles will have to chime in, but I think that is a common trait among them. look through the pics in my link above and you can see the flat I am talking about.
