Picked up a Springfield M1A today!
Picked up a Springfield M1A today!
Well, that's another bucket list gun off my list. Traded around for a Springfield Armory Standard M1A today. I can't wait to get this baby at the range to see what it can do! I've been wanting one of these for a very long time. Nice surprise was that it had the oiler and cleaning brush tool in the storage compartment.

Still on my list, along with a Garand.

Very Nice. I've wanted one for a while but unfortunately those are verboten in the People's Republic of Marylandistan right now.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

HELLO, Congrates...on the trade.
They are a fun rifle, it'll put a smile on the face of you and your friends.... and a drain on your wallet.(That's a $10.00 dollar magazine)... They are like Mosins and Lays potato chips; you can't have just one.... Good luck and have some fun.
Oh, and the M14 Forum has some great info and good folks on it, like here... And, I like the early style wood handguard... you've got to love American walnut and steel.... Let me know if you need a USGI stock for it fiberglass or wood.
Once again, congrates on the trade.

I got the full length as well....love it. I can see those sights better than any rifle I own. Mine cut me the first time out, The cocking handle had a sharp edge and I lightly used emery cloth on it. The trigger guard also. : Very fine rifles.

I've been walking the stores and what few shows I have time to attend in the past year and found nothing to catch my eye. I'm thinking I've about filled my needs except for one of these rifles that I've wanted for several years now.dou44 wrote:nice rifle that is on my list someday
Costs here look to be starting around $1,400 and way way up from there. Better barrels maybe ????
Pretty expensive weapon, after shooting and spending time with it do you feel the rifle is worth the price ?
I can't complain, I picked up my M1 CMP at camp Perry a few years back for $950.oo and love it.
Very nice, thanks for the pictures. Do they make a wooden hand guard for this type of rifle ? Always thought the plastic/ vinyl hand guard looked cheap for such a nice rifle.
Re: Picked up a Springfield M1A today!
That is great! I picked up my M1A this past Wednesday and it will go great with my M1 Garand. The M1A has a non-wood stock, but I will take care of that soon and get a Surplus M14 wood stock.

I've seen wooden hand guards, but they are susceptible to catching on fire, and not recommended for those who shoot a bit with them. I'm going to stick with the plastic hand guard myself.Jbob wrote:I've been walking the stores and what few shows I have time to attend in the past year and found nothing to catch my eye. In real money I have $1,100.00 in mine. The trade value of what I traded for it was $1,400.00. I see plain jane M1A's and M1A Socom's pretty often in the $1,100 to $1,200 range. I haven't shot mine yet, but I'm sure it will be a fine shooter. I have a couple of M1 Garands (which are my favorite shooters), so I'm sure me and the M1A will get along just fine. Definitely worth the price to me too as I traded an extra AR-15 and a Springfield Mil Spec 1911 for it. I still have five other AR's and five other 1911's so I'm not hurting for those either.
I've been fortunate in my collecting, and my bucket list of guns is slowly getting smaller. Once I get a WW2 P38, and a USGI 1911 I'll be for all intents and purposes done with my wish list which is pretty cool. I've only been earnestly collecting since 2010, and I've gotten through my wish list more quickly than I could have ever imagined.

M1 Garand, followed by SAFN49 8mm Egyptian contract. The 14 does good, very good, but the Garand and the overbuilt SAFN49 are just a hair better in the accuracy department.

Maryland has some screwy gun laws concerning "Scary" features on rifles. I can buy a H-BAR AR-15 but not a 'pencil' style barrel. I can't have a bayonet lug.

I am developed a love for the FN-49. I would take the Colombian over the Egyptian. Egyptian is missing the firing pin safety stop and usually has one piece firing pins. Colombian has the two piece with notch for FPSS. I do like the 8mm round but .30-06 is tough to beat. Lux would qualify as well but I don't own one of them yet. You left out the French MAS 49/56.Junk Yard Dog wrote:M1 Garand, followed by SAFN49 8mm Egyptian contract. I also have the Venezuelan 7mm SAFN49. At the time I bought the Egyptian I had nearly 8000 rounds of Egyptian 8mm ammo that I bought dirt cheap from a local ammo hoarder when he got divorced. I was shooting that ammo for years, I used some of it later on in the Hakim's. I never bought any of the French Mass semi auto's, 7.5 French was impossible to find back then and yet the rifles were still expensive. I opted for the Lebel, and Berthier rifles that I did have ammo for, plus being that they did not see use in WW2 or WW1 I just wasn't that interested, I spent the money on Garands instead and never regretted that move.

I've seen Buddy Hinton's collection of ads. Crazy to think the French MAS-49 was $299 and G43 was $399 being today the MAS-49 rarely breaks $1,000 and the G43 rarely can be found under $2,000 and many times is over $3,000. I still don't have a G43.
I'm trying to buy a Venezulean FN-49 this week. I do like the FN-49. I would really like to find a Brazilian and an Indonesian.
I have at least one example of each of the French MAS except the Paratrooper and Marksman. Hopefully one day I will find one I can afford.
Now that I have a Lebel in my hands I am starting to reconsider the earlier French Rifles. The tubular magazine and mag cutoff are really neat features and I see there are multiple variations. The amount of Milsurps on the want list never seems to end.

Springfield M1-A's are great rifles. These are my 2. One is a NRA / Camp Perry Commemorative that I haven't fired. The other is a SOCOM 16. The SOCOM is one of my favorite range guns. I haven't scoped it because I really like the Tritium Sights. I want to get one more. A Standard Rifle like yours. They're not cheap. But for the money they're one of the best rifles out there.

Billt, my brother has the synthetic stock scout model just like yours. Comments about the shorter stock model being not as accurate, while likely true, makes little difference to me after shooting this bear. It is accurate enough, believe me.
