1897 Finn arrived!

Post by miner49r »

I have the 1897 Finn Mosin in my possession now and I have to say it is so much different to the other 91/30's in the collection.
The rifle looks to be in great condition, counterbored about half an inch with dark rifling so it will be interesting to see how it performs on the range. Headspace was checked OK.

What do you guys think is right or wrong with this gun because I am not very familiar with Finn Mosins. Hopefully it is worth what I paid (even if I bought it with Canadian monopoly money).

Congratulations on the m91! Looks pretty good to me from what I can see in the photos. As long as its worth to you what you paid for it, that's all that really matters. I don't regret what I spent on any of my m91's, even my Remington that I way over-paid for. It was worth it to me. I have a feeling you'll enjoy shooting that one!

Excellent.  You have a Finn re-worked M91 that looks to be in great shape. Great wood, very nice clear stampings on the barrel shank. These pre-1900 rifles aren't all that common anymore, especially in this condition. I'd say that you did very well. Give the bore a good cleaning and it may brighten up.

Shoot it and clean it a couple of cycles hot and the bullets will burnish the rifling from the chamber forward and get better each time around. People just don't seem to realize the reason their bores are dark and dingy is because they haven't been shot enough! They need exercise (like me) and that with proper cleaning makes them shine like they should. Looks like a nice one that needs you to shoot and enjoy it. Congrats! Bill

Dang that thing is long! My safe is overflowing. The Finn was a tight squeeze but it fit barely. I guess it's time for another safe to hold the various guns stashed around the house and free up some space in the current safe. It will be an interesting conversation with my wife considering she has no idea where all the guns are hidden...

Canadian money, that's the stuff that comes with that board game that has the little plastic houses and get out of jail game card right? :) The rifle looks good, what dark bore? I can clearly see the rifling, when you can't even see the faintest trace of rifling then it's a dark bore. Who cares what it cost, you wanted it, now you have it, that's all that matters.

Looks darn nice to me, congrats! As Zeebill said, shoot that sucker, clean it, & shoot it some more. I bet that bore cleans up nice.

Nice rifle. Here is my 1897 Finned M91. It's my favorite Mosin to shoot.

Just looking at the sling bands on your rifle and wondering how many differences there are in sling attachments. I know there were all sorts of things used but was there any standard when the Finns did their magic?

There are 4 patterns of M91 barrel bands. The Mosin info pages for the M1891 have an ID section. Both my M91s have different bands.

Some Finn Mosin have standard sling slots but most have the swivel type mounted in the slot space. My 1917 has the swivel type.

Gorgeous gun!

I can feel you on running out of safe room. My mosins take up over half of my 42 gun safe. It is reeeaallly tight in there
