My SVT-40 showed up yesterday and certainly has some stories to tell.
The stock is an A type without the star or A but it has the gun serial number stamped in it. There are 2 repairs: left side of the receiver and underside of the forestock. Bore condition is excellent.
Questions
Did A stocks see active service in standard SVT-40's?
Would arsenal re-barrel guns?
More pics coming when I get home.

No, the A stocks were on avt-40's. The automatic version of the svt-40. However, Your rifle may have been a auto (avt) when first made. When they (Russians) decided that they were not very well suited in auto / semi (select fire), they converted a lot of them to semi auto only. During refurb, they used avt stocks on svt rifle also. That is possible what happened to yours also.
Your receiver bridge is almost square, which leads me to believe it was always a SVT-40 (at least the action was). The stock is probably a replacement from an original AVT40.
So there are a few things to look for. Take a look here. This is the most precise info on them on the web. Too much crap every where else.
I'm a little confused about the receiver Bridge now that I've taken another look at it. It matched the picture of a converted rifle on the Mosin Nagant link.

Maybe my eyes are deceiving me...
The barrel has numbers not matching anywhere on the rifle.

What's going on there?
The rifling seems to be in great shape.

The front sight is way off center. The witness marks align though.
