First post so I'll just write what I bought, any and all comments appreciated.
It's my sons Christmas present.
It's a Westinghouse 1915, it has what I believe are Finnish indicators, but the seller disagreed.
It has a boxed SA stamp on left side of serial number, a D also stamped near serial number. Also has the metal sling loops in each cut out and the the rear sight is arched.
The stock has no markings, and it appears the wood was refinished at some point. All serial numbers match and the bore is in awesome condition!
It has no bayonet, I don't see wear on the barrel from a bayonet either.
I know all the Westinghouse rifles have 1915 stamped, the serial number is about 480.000, the "New England" is arched.
What do you folks think?
Thanks
The Finns definitely got ahold of that one at some point (Boxed SA, and D) And believe it or not it's not a 1915, the curved "New England" means it was a later model, probably 1918, weird I know, great find, I'm sure he'll love it

I'm curious why the seller disagrees. If owner could start thread with pics that would be great. The only reason I can see them disagreeing is they don't know any better or they think the stamps aren't legit.

Lol, right? That's a dead give away and isn't rare

Usually the SA Stamp and D Stamps do mean it's a Finn, but unfortunately there have been certain unscrupulous individuals over the years who went crazy stamping things. I know there are some who say it is not an issue but the fake SA Stamps have been around for at least 10 years.

They wouldn't make and sell the stamps if there weren't people buying them. There is really only 2 reasons to own a SA Stamp. One to learn the difference from the real thing first hand in order to better spot fakes and two to stamp rifles, bayonets, and other items to add $100 or more in value.

Well nobody hopes to come across forged stamps, but it's a possibility, good thing I know mines been locked away for a long time and stayed away from forgers lol[emoji23]

And I certainly meant no disrespect showing the gun if it is refinished.

Most Finnish Nagants do, but that's because they were made to, the Finns literally changed serial numbers to match the number indicated on the receiver, if need be.

Hello, I just purchased my first Mosin (1926 91/30) and started lurking this forum half-heartedly for answers to questions. The more I searched, the more my curiosity was piqued. "Down the rabbit hole", would best describe it so far.

The history, variants and details are interesting, but I don't know why. Appreciate all the knowledge you all have amassed here, an invaluable resource. Truly.

Hello all, new member from NC. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Currently the proud owner of 4 Mosin Nagants. One T53 I just recently bought from Omega (which still is at my FFL waiting pickup and a thorough cleaning), one mint 1944 M44, one 1943 M44 which was in pieces when I received with cracked stock, mold, and the starts of an aftermarket finish (I shan't post about that to avoid breaking any rules), and a 1938 round receiver Tula that I'm waiting for a Tula bands to finish (previous owner lost them when he disassembled to clean so my benefit cause made for better price).

I'm a recent returner to the military surplus world, after a long hiatus. Have made bad decisions concerning my Mosins in my younger years (sold both my 1944 Mosin and my hex receiver when times got rough, thought I'd always have cheap Mosins) but have since decided I'm going to keep them all when I get my grubby hands on them

Hello everyone,
I would like to buy an M91/30 to keep in original condition (just remove the cosmoline) and to use as a shooter using non-corrosive ammunition ( (reloads) and AIM is listing one for $269.00 - is this representative of a typical price? I know practically nothing about Mosins except that they are cool looking and seem to be a solid rifle. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Hello my name is Will and I just got my first Mosin over Christmas. I've done a ton of research on it and I'm very intrigued in what I've found! Although there are a couple things that I can't quite figure out. I'm hoping I'll find some answers here.

ID? tips?

Post by brambleclad »

Hello all.
I am here because my father's father recently died, so now dad's got Grandpa's Mosin Nagant.

Grandpa served in the Korean War, but beyond that fact we don't really know how or why he ended up returning to the states with this rifle.

We'd love to ID it, clean it, restore it as necessary, and hopefully shoot it if y'all deem it safe and wise to attempt. Action works fine, dry-fires fine, looks (at first glance) like surface rust on the barrel is the only problem. But one step at a time:

what is it?

Barrel says 1941, there's a triangle with an arrow in it, bolt mag butt and barrel numbers don't match.

I'll get some more pics up as needed. Thanks so so much for any help you can offer!

It looks to me like an M38 that has been sporterized. Post some more pics of it in the restoration subforum if you don't mind.

that's a little disappointing as I was hoping I had an unaltered relic here, but sporterized won't make it any less fun to shoot.
Posting more pics now in the restoration subforum. Thank you

Hello, all.
I am a longtime Mosin Nagant collector in Michigan and came across this board recently. I am always looking to learn and perhaps I can help answer a question or two.

Hey, my name is Patrick Ford and I've had a handful of Mosins along with other milsurps. One of my favorites to date is my VKT 1941 M39. I've recently picked up a VKT 1942 M91. I've come here to get more knowledge on what I have and see what else I need to know for when I find that next Mosin.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I found this forum while looking up stuff about Mosins. I have a 1928 Tula on layaway and look forward to the process of 'unpickling' it of Cosmoline, and cleaning it up. I love that this forum is about preservation and I am excited about owning a piece of history.

My son told me that our fun shop had gotten a batch of Mosins in. We have talked about getting one for a while. After I put mine on layaway and walked outside, he said, 'Dang, I want one too.'
