I'll eventually get a cleaning rod for this one and my1943 M44 since both are missing them. For now, I'm just spending my time slowly but patiently cleaning this rifle and fighting the urge to get Chinese food for lunch today
For the price, non matching is just great, looking forward to pics when the cleanup all done, so far the carbine looks fine!

Man, that fellow has been selling them for a looong time.

I have an Omega T53. I bought it for $35 (I think) many years ago when they first stared (Maybe it was $25??? not sure any more!). It was a real wreck of a Mosin. However, after cleaning and a lot of love, it is OK.

I doubt that they are selling from the same batch these days. I know they ran out or was not selling them for a while. But maybe????

We used to have a "who had the crappiest and most beat up Mosine contest" here years ago. I think I used to come in 2nd place. I think Millman?????? had one worse then mine he called "carp shooter" or something like that! :chuckles:
http://www.thedolk.com/T53/index.html

Here is the first mention of the "carp shooter" on this forum. The forum software was changed back in 2011 or somewhere around there and we lost a bit of the original posts. The first contest were in the older software and lost!

What method of cleaning do y'all recommend? For my other milsurplus I normally just wife down with mineral spirits and then do a BLO rub. For super dirty ones, just use dishwasher detergent, water and a spongy pad. But from what I read, Tung oil is closest to original?

Don't want to get kicked out this awesome website for breaking g rules but also trying to general clean this dirty girl and get her back to fighting shape

Wow! This is a blast from the past! I like JYD had no idea these guys were still around or had any of these rifles still left. Just got off the phone with them and this current batch of T53's came from CAI. All or most of the T53's from Kevin Carney's collection had no import marks on them and came with strange looking beige canvas slings maybe adopted SKS sling and dog collars Chinese in origin for sure. They all had great bores and sometimes great triggers to go with them. Prices are $250 to $300 depending on year condition and accessories that came with them. Some of these rifles had obvious Russian parts on them too. We'll be at Morgantown this weekend so stop by and say hello to Joe and me! We are getting to the bottom of what is there that is worth something and safe to shoot so don't wait forever. Bill

Vietnam era bringhomes Bill? I can't think of any other reason a type 53 would have no import mark. Import marks have been mandated since 1968, and the Chinese weren't selling any weapons to the US market in the 1960's or 70's. Back in the day when things were a bit less formal it wasn't unheard of for an import marking to be forgotten, but that was the rare exception, not the rule, nobody likes prison after all and that's what happens to dealers and importers who flout Federal law. To find a large grouping of a particular type of rifle who's import history is known to be post 1968 without import stamps someplace on them would indicate they took a road less traveled to get here. Could be you are underselling them, better check your friends paperwork to see if he has the papers for the rifles, most soldiers tossed them the instant their boots hit the ground back in the world, but not all.

JYD, Who knows where they came from to be honest. You gotta understand Kevin had a likng for anything that had something to do with China, after all his business name was North China arms and antiques. As far as papers if there ever were papers they have long went MIA, if Kevin ever had them, which I bet he probably didn't. I figure in the typical Kevin fashion they were bought back in the day at some show or some buddy for a bit of nothing without papers. I sometimes wonder how Kevin kept anything strait, as there is zero in the way of organization to anything, and that not only applies to his guns, but his paper work is next to non-exsistant. Hell, the T53 rifles up there were some of the best looking guns in the attic, if you'd only see the pallet of hangyangs, and chang kai sheks that look like Omegas load of t53's :facepalm2:

Some folks think that it would be a dream to dig through something like this, but after the fun wears off it becomes a nightmare, and alot of work :bonk:

Thanks, I've just starting carefully wiping it off today, got tired up helping my dad clean/fix his gutters. So far wiping off very nicely, and still letting the foaming bore cleaner do its thing.

Starting to get nice rifling, a bit dark but still better than expected. The main part I was worried about was at the end of the barrel, but the more it soaks the more it's slowly starting to show.

Believe one I run a brush through it tomorrow it will really define itself

Was Kevin a gun Hoarder? At least if so he was hoarding interesting things, milsurp is a milsurp no matter if it shoots or not. To me the most interesting ones are the beat up examples. You look at them and just wonder how they came to be that way, they served during interesting times. The only type 53 I ever paid money for was the bringhome, I bought that one right from the man who brought it home. I knew about it's existence for years, and one day he took me by surprise when he asked if I wanted to buy it. Back then Vietnam wasn't that far in the past yet, the relics of that war had no collector following, the guy had kids who were getting to the age were they get into everything and he wanted no guns around. I would have just locked it up, but I guess he also wanted nothing around to remind him of a less fun time in his life. That's also the only matching type 53 I ever came across. I ended up with four rifles from that conflict before suddenly they became sought after and prices shot up.

I know the Chinese imports you are talking about, I own some of them, not a pile, a few was enough in my case. Wall hangers, relics of history, I wouldn't fire one on a dare. In 1987 or 1988 you could have bought one for ten bucks.

So he just recently got this batch and started to resell? Did he say if cai didn't want to try to sell them cause of their condition?

I didn't even think to ask him when I called where they came from, I just assumed he had found a connex he had forgotten about with some inside.

I'm planning on buying another later in the month when I get paid, and when my FFL gets back from shot show in Vegas

The more I hear your awesome stories the more I wish I was born sooner sometimes. Or just would have been more attentive to my military surplus needs when I was younger.

I personally have only come across one Vietnam bring back, it being an early year (can't find paperwork where I wrote it down) Norinco SKS. Had definitely spent some time in the rice fields, got it at a gun show for $180 bucks a few years back. A dealer had just bought it off a Vietnam veterans wife, even had the paperwork . Apparently he brought back several weapons, and they were all on one form so I didn't get the original paperwork just a copy of it. It had gunk coming out everywhere, cleaned it and shot the snot out of it. Eventually sold it to a friend for what I had in it so he could present it to his dad, another Vietnam.veteran who wanted it.

Always like to try to help other veterans out, especially cause I had a few Vietnam guys help me out and gift me stuff when I came back from military surplus haitus.

Hope your bore turns out good, the one I bought was a sewer pipe and every round keyholed at 25 yards, it shot about a 12" group at that distance.

Had two problems that I noticed tonight while I was working on the rifle stock

First is that noticed a crack inside the stock (see picture), but doesn't appear too deep. Debating whether to attempt a repair, or just leave alone and monitor for the time being

Second is that the end cap is very loose on the stock. Plus, the screw head is already very shallow and doesn't want to come up. Got some Kroil on it right now to see if I can loosen it up. Will have to research to see what I can do to tighten up that fit

Didn't do much beside clean the stock, continue to work on the barrel, and did start cleaning up the bayonet so I could hopefully reinstall it tomorrow once I complete the barrel action clean up

Hoping for the best, so far the bore continues to improve each day.

Plan on running some Sweets 7.62 and JB Paste through it hopefully tomorrow time permitting

You know what I didn't really ask when he got the latest batch of Type 53's just where he got them so I don't know when they came from CAI but just that they came from them. Looks like you are getting through to the Type 53. I think when you are done and get some shooting done with it you will be pleasantly surprised how easily these old war horses shoot and handle. They are not beauty queens but they are good shooters and handlers and if there ever was a truck gun I think they would stop just about anything. Great to know they are still out there! Bill :D

PS remove the grease around that crack and dribble some of the cheaper and thinner super glue down in that crack and you should be good to go for a lifetime. That is a common place for a Mosin to crack and the super glue is usually thin enough to get in there and stop it from going farther. As far as the nose piece if it defies removal, which some do, sliver and drive small pieces of wooden matches down under the metal to tighten it up and she will be fine.
