Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
What exactly did I buy link is below.
It seems to be the last known M28-30 serial number. The receiver is marked 1940 and the stock has a 1939 Civil Guard Cartouche. Seller says in listing stock has no finish, but it looks finished to me. The bolt handle is numbered, but there seems to be a different number on the bolt body I can't see.
Here is the odd part. The stock has a cut out for a bent bolt, but not like other cutouts I have seen. Stock is also cut for diopter sights. Being this is the last known serial I am hoping someone has seen this rifle before. If so did it have the same stock and bolt since leaving Finland. If so were the diopter sights missing since leaving Finland?
It was an impulse buy. I saw the auction with an hour or so to go. There was an opening big of $450 I bid $460 I won it for $455. I was very surprised to see no other bids and now I am a little nervous.

I saw that one too. My thoughts were that bubba cut out the stock for a sniper bolt for reasons that escape me. If it had been priced lower I would have had some interest but would have replaced the stock at some point if I could find a nice one. Of course, I'm not a Finn expert. The cuts don't look new, so who knows. Shame though.. it was once a really nice stock.
Re: RE: Re: Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
I thought the same thing but Pahtu has a similar stock and there is also the cut out for the diopter sights.qz2026 wrote:I saw that one too. Also confirmed the seller bought it direct from Century and that's how it came. I don't think Century would have bothered cutting the stock. Seller is respected so I believe he didn't touch it. Maybe Century swapped the stocks? Maybe the Finns swapped them? Or maybe it was going to be converted to a M28/57 and never was?

I saw that too but didn't want to risk that money on a rifle that didn't speak to me.
Don't know if it was the Finns who modified the stock or was it bubba? CAI has also snipered many Finns in the past so maybe they could have also done this.

Re: Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
Stock is a Finnish rifle stock clearanced for a rear mounted Optica scope which I believe was made for artillery originally. The cut for the bent bolt is made for a number M28/3x something rifle. I forget the numbers and at this moment can not find them. Google search and unclogged mind will find it. Alsky has one I believe too. When you take the rifle out of the stock be very careful of the shims or another maybe surprise I hear exists. You did well regardless of price even though some parts are missing including the bent bolt which the Finns did. Congrats! Email or call Capt. for more info. Bill
Re: Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
You mean an M28/33 Bill? If that's the case I am more than pleased with my risk. It certainly matches up to the one on Mosin Nagant .net. I just overlayed the pictures and the cut out is dead on.

The seller is a good guy I have bought from before, if he says he bought the piece from the distributer, he did.
The modified 28-30 barreled action I have does not have a modified stock, it has a standard 1940 dated stock.
The bolt is also not bent on my rifle.
Capt, I believe your stock is for the not so known M28-57 rifle, a grandpa if you will to the 28-76 series of rifles.

I do not always fire a rifle, but when I do....it is a Mosin I choose.....
Re: Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
Yes what Pahtu said .
That is a nice find on the M28/30 with a target stock.
I believe that your new M28/30 is wearing a stock that was once mated to an M28-57 target rifle ( designated to competition & target practice). There is a little bit of their history written here : http://archive.is/8vqkU and also a little more with a picture on pages 185 through 192 in Palokangas book number two.
The notch at the left rear of your stock was made to accept the Finns standard receiver aperture sight. The receiver on those rifles had been machined to accommodate the sights long dovetail and also drilled & tapped to accept the attachment screw. I have attached a few pictures of M28/76 rifles for reference. The same sight was used on both the M28/76 & M28-57 rifles.

It looks like the M28/33 was more of a triangular stock cut compared to the straight line with curved at end cut of the M28/57. Still I'm happy. At least I have a realistic chance of getting diopter sights. Anyone have any?

The only thing odd though is what is with the double step cut. Meaning the new one looks completely different than Alsky's for the sight cutout. Or is that what was meant by step for standard sight.

Re: Odd 1940 M28-30 Any Ideas?
The M28/30 stocks used on the early M28-57 rifles would have been retrofitted ( cut later on for the bolt handle & for the sight) and it would have been easier to make all square cuts. The M28/76 stocks were made up new and that front notch would have been easier to contour at the stock making facility.
The cut-out for your stocks "once upon a time" bolt handle would have been the same contour as the type used on both the M28/57 rifle & the M28/76 rifle. Your picture of the little notch in the 28/33 stock is not the type of notch that is found on your new rifle or on the M28/76 rifles.
I have attached picture of the contour of a bolt that would match the notch on your stock.

Doesn't look like yours is machined and drilled and tapped for the site. The cutout in the stock is there, but the rest of the rifle looks like a M28-30. In order to get the diopter sites on it, you would have to machine and drill and tap it.capt14k wrote:At least I have a realistic chance of getting diopter sights. Anyone have any?

I realized that it wasn't the same cut. That's what I meant by still I'm happy. Meaning it doesn't look to be a M28/33 stock, but a M28/57 stock as you stated. The M28/33 is more of a triangle.Alsky wrote:The M28/30 stocks used on the early M28-57 rifles would have been retrofitted ( cut later on for the bolt handle & for the sight) and it would have been easier to make all square cuts. What about the cut on the other side where the sight is? That is the one that looks different than yours. Is that what the cut looks like on the M28/76? Wasn't there an in between as well called the M28/66?

Good point. Well so much for that idea. Also realized they cost as much as the rifle. I've gotten by without them on my others. I will get by without them on this one.dolk wrote:Doesn't look like yours is machined and drilled and tapped for the site. capt14 bring your rifle over when you get it and we will see if a M28/76 barreled action into your new stock.

One Hell of a nice find!!! Even if it is not a 28-57. It is a Hell of a lot more then I have of one of those!!!
Now that is a temptation. But I love it as it is. That certainly is a one or two of a kind in my book.

Thank you. I definitely feel better about my gamble than I did 48 hrs ago. The lack of bidders is what really made me nervous. Especially since the initial bidder didn't even increase his bid $5.dolk wrote:One Hell of a nice find!!! Even if it is not a 28-57. It is a Hell of a lot more then I have of one of those!!!

I will take pictures and post when I receive it which hopefully will be by Saturday.

The stock I mentioned to both of you on the phone had a more or less standard M39 action in it when I found it by the way. I don't remember whether I mentioned that to either of you. It did not shoot well either, was not happy in that stock at all! Be interesting to get all this stuff together at one time and see what fits what if possible. Mine has the square cuts by the way.
