Took this buck at about 175-180 yards using my savage 99 in 300 savage and an old leupold 3x9. The model 99 was my grandfather's favorite hunting rifle. My dad and I keep the tradition and caliber alive.

Cool, but remember, post what you kill, but if what you kill can get you 20 to life then it's best to shoot, shovel and shut up.
I almost got a buck like that this morning with the front of my car, looks like someone will be eating good this winter.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

On the road is usually the only place I see bucks. Just happened to get lucky this time and this guy was actually in the woods. I hunt for my freezer so although the antlers are a plus the venison is the priority.

Very nice deer; you shot it with a classic rifle too. Don't ever sell that Savage 99, cause if you do, I may be the buyer.
Re: Naw, How 'bout you.
Ty! Nah my uncle gave me the savage when I came of hunting age. My dad still has my grandpas. Too sentimental to ever sell. It had a Redfield 2.5 power on it. Had to change it out to see the points (3 on one side to be legal in pa). Got an older leupold cause I didn't think a new scope would look good on it.tjtM38 wrote:Very nice deer; you shot it with a classic rifle too. Took this guy today with my '44 PU sniper. Fairly close shot, something around 50-75 yards.steelbuttplate wrote:Let's post what we members kill this fall, jest for fun. PU sniper for a 50-75 yard shot? You could have used an M38 for that, or tossed a rock. That's the sort of range we see here in NY, most of the hunting areas around here are heavily brushed , thick cover were any sort of distance shot is unlikely. The state made using rifles here for hunting illegal, shotgun only unless the rifle is a front stuffer. All the bitching and crying I heard about that one, yet everytime I ask just were they are getting a 100-150 yard shot I get silence. We have very few working farms here anymore were permission would be granted to hunt the fields, and the few farms that remain are too small, too close to homes, roads, bodys of water, and so on that would prohibit hunting anyway. That buck will give you some good eating, enjoy

Thanks! Looking forward to enjoying it at the dinner table. It was shot in moderately thick woods, "down in the TN hills" as the song says. I couldn't really attempt a much longer shot given the hilly terrain and brush. I took the PU because it covers my inadequacies as a marksman with open sights which I am working on. All in all, being my first deer, I am pretty happy!Junk Yard Dog wrote:PU sniper for a 50-75 yard shot? You could have used an M38 for that, or tossed a rock. Congrats that is a nice buck! What do you like to do with yours? I've been honing my jerky making skills the last few years.

My first one. I do like summer sausage and roasts when I have had some given to me in the past. I have a barrel smoker so I am curious what if anything I could smoke. Still have to investigate that.

Re: Naw, How 'bout you.
For your barrel smoker, cut steaks from the hams about 1 " thick, soak in Dale's steak seasoning for 10 minutes, smoke it for 2-3 hrs, 170-180 degrees, until it's dried , then slice it real thin. I like it good as jerky. Refrigerate.
