Revisiting the hi cap mag question....

Post by Witchdoctor »

Ok, did get a lot of info/opinions on hi cap types of SKS mags, but here's something else I'd cannot find a definite answer on...does using a detachable higher cap mag in a SKS keep it from being 922R compliant ? I have heard yes, no, gotta do this or that with so many parts changing out, I don't want to modify my rifle just use a higher cap mag if I wanted to without changing anything on the rifle or being ilegal as far as the BATF is concerned, hi cap mags here in Fl are fine.

From my understanding detachable mag on any SKS other than Chinese 922r kicks in and you need two other parts in addition to the magazine, assuming the magazine is American Made. If not American Magazine you need 4 parts. If you install high capacity fix mag 922r compliance isn't needed. The reason it is on all SKS except Chinese is the BATF considers Chinese SKS to have been imported with detachable magazines.

As for 922r compliance I've never heard of anyone getting checked for it even in the PRNJ.

Just remember.... there is a first time for everything, just because someone has never been checked, doesn't mean they can't be checked, the rules are there and it is a chargeable offence. Personally, I wouldn't want to be the ATF poster child for the 922r felony. :D

There is also the alternative, if one really didn't want to worry at all with 922r headache and/or the probability of the magazines not functioning. Since high cap magazines are legal in your state, find a SKS M, D, Type 93 or Type 84. There are a few other SKSs as well that were purpose built for high capacity magazines. Granted they are not official military weapons, they are altered military weapons, and even though they are commercial fun toys, some variants are highly sought after and collectible. The commercial high capacity models are usually more apt to work correctly in my experience than shoving a duckbill mag in a standard rifle.

An example of one, the Type 84, the only commercial Chinese SKS with a 16.5 inch barrel, bayonet and 30rd Ak style mag.

922R is for importers, not end users. Could you get caught? Maybe. Could a satellite fall from orbit and kill you? Maybe.

I would be more concerned of damaging my SKS from sustained fire it was not intended for. That's my two cents...

That is, however, the kind of issue that the government will use to beat you to death with if any other problems arise. If, heaven forbid, you ended up shooting someone, either intentionally or unintentionally, or if the gun was stolen and used in a crime, or any one of many similar issues, it would suddenly become a big issue in the minds of the prosecutor. It would be and "illegal, home-modified assault weapon" and you would be the evil criminal that created it.

For the record my Saiga conversions are compliant. I think it's ridiculous that I can't use the original magazine they came with and I had to spend more than double on American Made Magazines but I did it none the less. I was just saying I've never heard of anyone checking

Some of us have work to do, but since you insist, they are crap, unnecessary crap at that, and butt ugly on an antique milsurp.

JYD, tell entropy about the POS SKS that drops the mags when fired. He is dying for it.

That piece of shit? My foot hurts just remembering it. Such a high level of work done there, waste of a perfectly good used Chinese military rifle. They altered it to accept the basic AK47 magazine, added a magazine well, only the magazine drops out of that well after each round is fired and aims for ones feet. A fully loaded 30 round steel AK magazine is heavy, and put a nasty scrape on the expensive pair of leather shoes I was wearing at the time plus a bruise on my foot. What a piece of useless shit, the Chinese make a 20 round magazine that is at least acceptable, it replaces the original ten round and is non removable, looks like a larger version of the original, why in hell anyone thought converting an SKS to AK mags in a world full of real AK47's would be a good idea escapes me. Ten rounds of 7.62x39 is more than enough to deal with any problem, it takes seconds to snap in a stripper clip of ten more rounds, and the SKS stripper clips work just fine. The extended magazines, including the Chinese one, destroy the fine lines of the rifle, make it look like shit. I had to buy that fuckin piece of crap SKS in order to complete a multi rifle deal, a buy them all or nothing deal, worse yet while they were busy converting it to AK mag's they also shortened it into what they called a "para" carbine. Right, you give that piece of shit to a real paratrooper he will fire one round and then hunt down the designer and shove it right up his ass. Now the rifle is parts in case I break something on my other real SKS rifles.

I can't say if it's a POS or even if it works.. never shot it. Why.. cause I have many other normal SKSs I know and like, with normal box magazines. I bought more because it's collectible and it's a pretty uncommon variant, reportedly less than 500 Type 84s were made. I got it for a good price, I paid what a normal Chinese SKS costs, and it had the number matching magazine. They can sell for as much or more than an Albanian or even some of the Russian variants, over the past few years, they have made their own niche market.

Besides, I have several Aks and a wonderful pair of Vz's to get my high cap donkey dong magazine fix on. I am a firm believer, if you want a high cap magazine, buy a purpose built weapon designed to use a high cap magazine. Slapping in a high cap conversion magazine in something is kind of like dressing a pig up, slapping it on the butt and calling it a super model, in the end, you still have a pig under there. :D
