Didn't mention this M44 because of the policy in place here but thought to share what l have.
This is my second M44 & only other Mosin-Nagant rifle but this one has been modified a little.
The stock is original but trimmed on the left side to accommodate a scope mount & of corse the receiver has been drilled & tapped for the mount.
It also has a ATI bolt handle for use with a scope that is butt ugly.
Bought this one off a friend that has come a apaun hard times with the intention of possibly me making this into a semi-scout rifle but in the sense of how possibly a armorer would have done it if he had the availability of the parts.
Removed the mount & bought a reproduction accu-mount scope with undrilled mount to accommodate the holes already done, & bought a bolt body & bent handle to replicate a sniper set up, we'll as close as I can.
I know that everyone will not like me because of this but since the original out body is for lacked of the better word, destroyed & the receiver was drilled already & the modifications done the the stock to accommodate those previous features my thoughts are that at least I'm making this old girl be for the most part have some of her dignity restored.
Please be kind but honest thoughts?

Re: I have a project M44
Why not just buy another milsurp stock and bolt body, put them on the rifle and either fill or ignore the drilled holes? That way it at least looks like a correct M44, scope on a carbine? I would walk into walls if I took my glasses off but even I haven't contemplated putting glass on a carbine. The whole point of the M44 was to have a weapon with better maneuverability characteristics, big ol' scope on top kinda ruins that . M44's too heavy for a scout rifle anyway, it matches the weight of the 91/30 thanks to the bayonet and mount as well as a thicker diameter barrel, hanging extra crap on it only makes the weight issue more pronounced.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Yeah the weight would be massive compared to what Col. Cooper had in mind & the Bayonet in today's world is for the most part a novelty but not needed.
I could work the M91/30 stock I just got into the M44 configuration of hide the holes & I do have a Russian blot body.
Have to think hard on this one.

Already been modified by previous owner, my thoughts were to just improve it to what it should be if done remotely correctly or hide what was done like was mentioned before.steelbuttplate wrote:President elect Trump said anyone caught modifying a Mosin will be sent to a red varnish factory in Siberia.

Re: I have a project M44
Not sure what I would do with this .....I wouldn't have picked it up in the first place, but that is just me. But what ever is done will not adversely effect the collectable value of the rifle any longer. Who ever drilled it saw to that. So, for me I would have only bought it for parts (if I needed them).
For you...it probably won't matter what you do with it now, that is up to you.
Next time (if you would), please don't post "repair" stuff in the "Collectible Mosin Nagant Forum". A better place would have been under "Firearm Restoration & Questions Forum". That keeps the collectors off my back.

I bought it like I said to help a friend out & that it is another M44, ironically the same year as my other one, outside of the bolt body with the handle on it I can deal with the scope on it if it was a better mount than the one that was used.dolk wrote:Not sure what I would do with this .....I wouldn't have picked it up in the first place, but that is just me.
