It may be one that Bannerman rechambered. JYD can give more information on these.

Re: westinghouse mosin
Bannermans out of NY state back in the twenty's re-chambered a lot of Remington's and Westinghouse Mosins to 30-06. Shortened barrel, cut back fore-stock and slightly bent bolt handle.

Could be one of the Bannerman rifles, they were the most prolific producers of these conversions but others did them as well in smaller numbers. It's not a conversion I feel safe shooting, the job requires cutting the chamber up into the barrel were the metal is thinner.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: westinghouse mosin
These are generally if they were made by Bannerman ok to shoot with reduced recoil or load ammo which is available. They are not what you would call safe with modern 30:06 loads available commercially today. I know people who do that but I really don't want to shoot or be around them when they do! Where you really run into trouble with these is when they are done by backyard gunsmiths with less than reputable practices and reputations. If it is marked like Dolk's post it is likely to be a Bannerman and with reduced loads safe to shoot. Staying around $200 give or take $50 is a smart buy although they do go higher at times. I have owned and shot about a half dozen of these over the years and some are really made nice and show craftsmanship. When they look kind of beat and shoddy buyer beware! Bill

$200 for a Bannerman? When was the last time you have seen on for sale. Yes, you might see on every so often in a gun show where people may not know what it is or don't want a sportster, but for the most part, they are not around. I paid $300 for one several years ago and was happy to pay that back then. Now, you don't see them for sale very often in the auctions like Gunbroker, and when you do, they are well over $400+ now. Maybe in a gunshow where someone may not know what they are, but not in the open public.
Note:
Remember, they were never a military surplus rifle. They were made here in the USA and left over when Russia refused to buy them. They were pushed around and bought by the US government to keep Westinghouse and Remington from going under. Then sold to Bannerman and they re-chambered them and shortened some of them. Very much part of a Mosin collection.

Re: westinghouse mosin
Alsky sold one for $165 awhile back. I turned one down for $250 at a show and believe me this fellow knew what he had. I have one for sale right now and have carried it for over a year and I would gladly take that $400 if somebody would offer it! Right now nothing over $200 is selling regardless of what it is. Wild prices on the internet to me are not the market as I buy little or nothing there because of those prices. Bill

Gunboards, Gun Auctions...and others.."wild prices?". I think they set the prices. I haven't seen a Bannerman for sale for over a year now. If you go to Gunbroker (and they are clearly the largest place to buy firearms) and do a search for Mosins, you will find a common M91/30 going for more then $250 these days. And a lot of them for sale. Very few M27's/m28's and those are starting for north of $400 these days (and selling). Local gunshows tell you nothing about prices. They are just a small part of what is selling and if you don't use them, then you are missing out on the majority of the firearms being sold. Most firearms are on the internet.zeebill wrote:Wild prices on the internet to me are not the market as I buy little or nothing there because of those prices. Bill
Send me a picture of your Bannerman, I may want to buy it for $150.

I got mine on GB for a little over $200. She doesn't want to extract but will work on it when time permits. Don't think I will shoot it unless I decide to reload some low pressure rounds. But, reloading 30-06 is not on my serious to-do list. Beautiful little rifle though... Content to have as a wall hanger.
