Service Grade Garand report

Post by CalFed »

A few years back I got a service Grade Garand from the CMP. I haven't shot it much, but 4th of July my younger son came up for the weekend and we got a chance for a trip to the range. Took some rifles that I haven't shot much...couple of GI M1 carbines, the SG Garand and a few C&R semi's...a Remington 81 and a Winchester .351 SL.

We had a bit of trouble sighting in the Garand...finally found that the front sight was loose and sliding around on the reverse dovetail.

Here are some pics of the SG Garand...

After we tightened down the front sight, we shot some of the PPU "Garand -safe" ammo and some Hornady 150 gr CMP "range ammo"

The SG seemed to like the Hornady ammo a little better. My son (who is a better shot than I), shot this 100 yard group with the PPU

I shot this 100 yard group with the Hornady ammo.

Very nice Garand. One of the last Garands built during WWII production. SN puts it June, 1945. Very nice !!

If you have everything with the CMP updated they have clipped ammo in sealed spam cans, 192 RNDs for $115.

Very Nice !!!

Thanks, Chas!

I've got a good supply of HXP and LC CMP ammo. It used to be dirt cheap.

They also sell some nice target ammo loaded with Lapua components and Hornady also makes Garand safe target ammo. I need to get to the range and have a shoot off of some with my handloads.

Nice !! I was a day late and a dollar short on the dirt cheap ammo. I'd hate to think how things may have gone if I'd have known about The CMP North Store sooner since I'm only 2.5 HRs from it and I'm in Cleveland quite often for work and only around 1 HR away. At 59 cents a RND with Enblocs and bandos sealed it's not bad in this era.

I need to start reloading. My Daughter and Son in Law got me a Lee kit a few years ago for Christmas. I'm looking forward to having time to reload soon.

I can only say that it is a good thing for my wallet that I'm thousands of miles from either CMP store :). As it is, I laid in a fair supply of CMP ammo back in the day and have had great luck reloading with the resulting brass. If you do reload it, just remember that the primer pocket is crimped and will need to be reamed or swaged when you reload it.

Very nice Garand, and glad you were able to figure out the front sight being loose. I need to get my Garands out to the range soon too!

From what I see on the web page they seem to be out of everything but $3000+ sniper rifles.

Both the SS and the NS had been pretty dry but the Nationals have been and still are going on at Camp Perry. They would put a few FG's out and a carbine or 2 hidden among the stores inventory but most cases they were gone pretty quick.

The SS just had a tent sale due to the SS moving. They had a lot of Garands out during the tent sale but I think they are back to the same (nothing) as before.

After they get caught up with their orders they are supposedly going to have them back on line for order

I'm continuing to get to the range and shoot various ammunition in my Garands to nail down the best for each one. Last week I got to the range for a few hours to shoot a couple of the Garands and a few Swiss rifles.

I tried some Hornady 168 gr AMAX M1 Garand match ammo and a clip of my handloads in the service grade.

Here is the Hornady match ammo @ 100 yards. The first round hit down at 7 o'clock. I made a sight adjustment and then shot the remaining 7.

I then fired 8 of my handloads...IMR 4064/168 gr Nosler CC. The service grade like it almost as much as the Hornady match ammo.
