Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Did I make the right decision passing on this one? By the time I saw this auction last night there was only 20 minutes left. I tried emailing the seller, but with such a short window I knew it would be a long shot to get a response. I wish he would have posted better pics and more of them. There was only one bidder and it sold for the minimum bid of $1,000 and came with a Bayonet. The reason I held off is something just didn't look right about the pics. I know it could have been just the poor quality of the pictures, but I was concerned that the metal was maybe painted. Any opinions would be appreciated. Especially what a well used matching Columbian FN-49 in original .30-06 value would be?

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Painted metal is normal for some of these rifles, just a typical way of touching them up , the British and Russians did the same thing. The FN-49 is a brick shithouse of a rifle, milled parts, heavy, I have the Egyptian 8mm, and Venezuelan 7mm, a grand wouldn't get either of them, but that's because I like these rifles. I would expect the .30-06 to bring a bit more than average for these, easier to find ammo here in the states, a G for the one in the auction is expected.

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
In that case I am now kicking myself for not buying it. Especially since it came with the Bayonet. I have an Century Built Egyptian Eagle of Saladin FN-49. I think I got lucky and ended up buying a decent built one. It at least has a metal butt plate. I bought it from an Army Sharpshooter. Came with the Original Echo Mount and Rings and a Decent Russian VOMZ Scope. The echo mount and rings is what made me buy it. That rifle is one of my favorite semis.

If you had the cash and it was what you wanted you should have jumped on it. These things are getting harder and harder to get. It looks fine from what limited pictures are available, but I have never heard of a bore getting dark from not being shot...

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Sure it will, if you don't oil it in storage and it starts to rust. Century built FN49's ? I knew about the FAL's but were in hell did they find enough FN49 parts to start production? Mine is an older import from before 1968.

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Well yeah I know they will rust from neglect and get dark that way. I guess guess when trying to sell a gun, dark from not shooting it sounds better than rust because I was too lazy to clean it.
Re: RE: Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
They are known as the Eagle of Saladin FN-49. If I remember correctly the receivers were made in Belgium for Egypt. Egypt never assembled them because they switched the the Maadi or Rasheed (forget which) and Century bought the unused receivers and other parts and assembled the rifles.Junk Yard Dog wrote:Sure it will, if you don't oil it in storage and it starts to rust. Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
I guess the Egyptians were hoarders who never tossed anything out, they stopped using the FN's in the late 1950's-early 60's. The Rasheed came before the AK, the Rasheed is a scaled down and modified Ljungman, not near as good a design as the SKS for the 7.62x39 round.

I think they switched to the Hakim first.capt14k wrote:They are known as the Eagle of Saladin FN-49. If I remember correctly the receivers were made in Belgium for Egypt. Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
I thought Hakim and FN-49 were simultaneous. Hakim first made in 1950 and FN-49 contracts were being filled still in early 1950s and used til 1956. I could be wrong.

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Rasheed came later, 7.62x39, I have one and it is nothing but a constant problem, I retired it from shooting when it broke on the range for the second time, something in the trigger group, I forget what. Now it's just a for lookin at rifle, SKS it ain't. The Egyptians should have just saved themselves some trouble and just handed them over to the Israelis who ended up capturing countless numbers of them during the 1956 war.

I don't think that is correct.
I think the Hakims were manufactured from 1956 to 1969. I've got two 1960's and a 1966.
Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
I thought the Hakims started in 1950. What about the Rasheed did that start in 1960 or later?

Not sure about the Rasheeds. I've never owned one, always thought I wanted one, not so sure after reading JYD's experience with one.
Re: RE: Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
I have a Hakim and AG42B and have wanted a Rasheed as well, but they always seem to sell for higher than I'm willing to pay.CalFed wrote:capt14k wrote:I thought the Hakims started in 1950. What about the Rasheed did that start in 1960 or later?

I've got a couple of Ljungmans and several Hakims. Always thought I wanted a Rasheed to round out the collection, but after JYD's experience, not so sure.capt14k wrote:I have a Hakim and AG42B and have wanted a Rasheed as well, but they always seem to sell for higher than I'm willing to pay.CalFed wrote:capt14k wrote:I thought the Hakims started in 1950. My sons and I use these for military rifle silhouette matches. The 6.5x55 Ljungman and the 8x57 Hakim are great rifles for these matches. The 7.62 x 39 Rasheed would be pretty worthless.

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
So long as it never gets near the range the Rasheed is no problem.

Re: Columbia FN-49 in .30-06 Question
Having owned both the Hakim and the Rasheed, JYD, are there significant differences mechanically between the two?
