I'm a new member of the CMP forums and also a new owner of a Mar 1943 Springfield M1 that was rearsenaled by SA in 1953 following the Korean War when it received a new barrel and possibly stock. I do not believe it was ever touched by the CMP. While all of the parts ended up Springfield matchy matchy, that was not my intent for purchasing the rifle. I purchased it primarily to be a shooter I can enjoy as well as for its being an important slice of American military history; I just fell into the fact that it looks nearly new (beginners luck). I have no issue with those on the CMP forum and have learned much about this model from them in a very short period of time. I hope to do the same here as I learn more about the Mosins as I'm feeling an itch to pick up a Finn M39 in the near future....

Here are a couple of pics of my M1:

Thank you. She is a looker and I'm hoping she's just as much of a shooter as soon as my ammo is delivered. I believe the wood is walnut--possibly pain sawn to get the most use out of the wood.

I've been interested in rebuilt marked Garands and glommed one at an auction earlier this month.

The auction pics came with this description...

U.S. Garand M1 semi-automatic rifle by Springfield Armory., .30 cal., SA barrel dated 11-65, military finish, wood stock, serial #4219605, in overall very good condition showing significant original military finish, good bore, crisp action and markings. The smooth wood military stock has the “P” proof on the pistol grip. The butt stock features sling swivels and a checkered metal butt plate with trap.

"O-6x" marked Garands were rebuilt by the Marine Corps in 1965, 1966 or 1967 and were electro-penciled on the top of the receiver, just behind the rear sight, with the letter "O" (assumed to be for "overhaul" and the last two digits of the year. So this was overhauled either at the Marine Corp depot at Barstow, California or Albany, Georgia in 1966.

The O-66 Garand arrived at my FFL today to begin it's 10 day "cooling off" period. I got a chance to look it over and it looks good. There is a boxed "P" cartouche on the pistol grip of the stock. The stock and metal are in excellent shape...literally no dents, dings or scratches on the stock and the same on the metal. There are no rub marks anywhere, even in the op rod groove on the receiver. Stock looks like an Overton replacement with a very dark finish..

The barrel is an 11-65 SA, with a sharp, shiny bore that gauges about .5 on the CMP muzzle gauge.

Could be wrong about this, but almost looks like it has not been used since it was rebuilt.

More and better pics after I've "cooled off" for 10 days...

I tried to convince my FFL that I was sufficiently dispassionate to take it immediately. No dice!

That's CA statute right? Picked my M1 up at a dealer south of town. One of the nice things about AZ is that there's no waiting period once NICS clears you. Of course, those of us with a state permit don't have to bother with NICS. It's fill out the 4473, show your state ID, CCW permit and pay. Once the ID and permit are copied, it's "Have a nice day."

Ohio has just gone on the NICS system for CCW background check and we are now the same as AZ.

That's how it is for us in West Virginia too. Some dealers still call in CCW permit holders as they're scared to not have the confirmation number, but that doesn't bother me as I know I'm going to pass.

Arizona's Concealed Carry permit has been recognized as Brady compliant for years. In fact, we are seeing a slow shift out here among private transactions. A growing number of private sellers now insist on a valid CCW permit or FFL transfer. I have not heard of any Arizona dealers insisting on running CCW holders through NICS and if I were a FFL, I wouldn't do it either. I deal with criminal history records information and attend annual training sponsored by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, which is the criminal records repository for the State of Arizona. As part of my duties, I perform criminal records checks on private process server applicants. We submit FBI ten print cards to DPS and they perform the state level search and transfer the data to FBI for the federal search. I then receive the rap sheets and reports and compare the identifying information to my applicant to determine if there is a match. NICS performs a name based search which is more prone to returning incorrect information. The other thing about the CCW permit is that as long as it has not expired, it's valid. If a permit holder commits or is believed to have committed an offense that would make them a prohibited possessor, law enforcement is required to seize the permit. I've also heard plenty of horror stories of records that were never reported to DPS and thus never entered into the system and records that should have been updated but weren't.

I picked up the "O-66" Garand today, since the 10-day "cooling off period has elapsed.

It is in great shape. It almost looks like it was overhauled and then went into storage. The stock, bore, and parkerizing are in near perfect condition. There are a few very light rub marks on the stock and very few dents or dings.

The bore is "1-" on the CMP muzzle gauge and the lands and grooves are shiny and sharp.

Everything feels tight and I'm looking forward to shooting this one.

Nice one. You know the CMP inspects and if necessary rebuilds these rifles before they hand it to you? Civilian MARSMANSHIP Program, it would be pointless to give you a rife that is badly out of spec so if it's a shooter you want the CMP is your best bet, there a shooter is guaranteed, not left to chance. Bore, throat, gas cylinder and piston, op rod spring tension, trigger pull, test fire for effect, headspace, all of this is inspected or gauged .
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Plus the CMP has some of the best pricing around.

Or at least they did. Who knows what the new prices will be when they reopen rifle sales.

Thanks, guys.

My first Garand was from the CMP and most of the rest of them are too. The CMP is an incredible deal and I highly recommend them.

I glommed this one because it had the USMC overhaul indicia and I've become interested in the 60's rebuild program rifles.

I would not be surprised if this is a former CMP rifle and may have them research the serial number to confirm that.
