New Bulgarian SLR-104

Post by Lotema »

All I can say is that my wife rocks. She has me on a very tight gun budget but every now and then she lets me ignore it. Last Sunday she told me that I could get the AK-74 that I had wishfully asked for around my birthday. She gave me a budget and told me not to go over that number. I was fortunate and was able to find an SLR-104 online for a good price. It however wasn't exactly what I was looking for, I wanted plum furniture and the triangle folding stock. I couldn't find that anywhere, so I knew I was going to have to scrounge for parts to make it the way I wanted it. I got the last of the parts today and was able to put it all together and take a few photos.

The SLR originally came with desert sand furniture. Not exactly what I wanted but it's what I was able to find. I knew it was going anyhow so I didn't really care too much. I didn't expect to like it very much but honestly, it's a lot better looking in person than it is in photos.

I wound up pulling off the stock and replaced it with the triangle folder. The handguards and pistol grip were replaced for plum. I picked up a couple of plum Tula magazines. Finally added on a mustard colored sling. The scope is a POSP 6x42 D-Pro. I've had that for the AK47 for a while and absolutely love it. Hoping it works as well on the 74 as it has on the 47.

And of course a side by side picture with it's older sister..

Can't wait to get this one out to the range this weekend!

  I think what you have is an Arsenal AK. If so, they are first rate, milspec rifles with a good reputation for accurate out of the box. I like the plum furniture and folding stock you installed. Please give a range report when able. Congrats.

Yup, the SLR-104 is an Arsenal AK and I've got some high expectations for it. I will say that the trigger is pretty gritty and will likely get replaced either with a G2 or possibly a Red Star adjustable trigger. I've dropped enough cash on this for now that the trigger will just have to wait a few months. My wife might murder me in my sleep otherwise!

It looks much better in the current configuration... Love that Plum color!

Let us know how it does at the range. :D

Thanks Rongo, I love the plum too. A 74 just really needs to be wearing plum! Took it out to the range and put it in the sled to dial it in with the scope and with irons. I have to say, I am very pleasantly surprised by how good it did. I only shot it out to 50 yards today. Next weekend I'll take it back out and stretch it to 100.

This was the best three shot group that I did with the POSP 6x42 scope. Need to adjust just a bit but the grouping makes me happy.

This was the best grouping I did with irons at the end of the day. If it keeps shooting like this, well, I don't know what I'm going to complain about! The black dot is the size of a dime.

Nice shooting, and yes, I like the plum colored furniture better, too. It just looks natural on an AK-74. And kudos for going with the PSOP; while not issue, they were used on them for a light handy DMR rifle by the Russians in Afghanistan.

Love it Lotema & really liked the way she shot this past weekend at the range! The mustard sling just sets off the plum furniture perfectly. :Drool1:

Arsenal makes some fine AKs. I have an SLR107 and SGL31. I think you will enjoy this one

It doesn't disappoint so far. It's been out to the range every weekend except this last one. I love my SGL-24 but the SLR-104 is a much better shooter. Time to stockpile some ammo for it!

That's a darn fine AK, and your wife's a keeper for sure. She must have given you a pretty high budget to pull off an Arsenal. Nice shooting by the way.
