1941 VKT with stock repair
SOG called it a crack. I call it a nice repair. Czar crest, R on bolt body, Three punches on right receiver at wood line. Tang 1916, May have been in Finland before revolution. Reds liked to deface crests. Good shooter, not my best.

I don't think I've seen an M39 with a repair to the "pistol grip" area like that. Thanks for sharing.

You never showed the way the crest is defaced so no comment on who did it or when. I have seen a couple of pistol grip failures in the M39. Usually the Finns drilled and doweled them and the repair is good for life in my experience. A couple of years ago I had one that someone here turned into a straight stock and it took a bunch of detective work to detect it. It shot just fine and I did not pay a premium for the straight stock it was made to look like. Had to sell it as a fantasy piece to keep it an honest sale though. Never showed any weakness and shot great through well over 100 rounds at the range. I have one that has both a repaired pistol grip failure and a splice failure with a coupon repair that shoots great. I have a great deal of faith in Finn repairs where as stateside repairs and my own I watch closely for failure. I know the Finns used a lot of different glues over the years from looking at the coloring of their repairs but they all seem to work just fine through all these years. They knew what they were doing I guess! Nice Rifle, enjoy it! Bill

Czar crest present. No deface. Led me to believe was in Finland prior to Red invasion. Reds ground out or over stamped crest.

R on bolt body may have been Russian contract. Or from British after non payment. From American Polar Bears. Or some other European purchase.

Re: 1941 VKT with stock repair
I'm thinkin not a repair, but a stock blank that was made from a 2x4 with a dovetail piece added to the butt end, since it looks like the splice is all one solid piece. A technique used to save wood, using smaller blanks to cut out stocks.....

Supports present full length. No dovetail seen. Space present right side consistent with repair. Not sure finns needed to save wood as country was covered in it. Two piece stock was not to save wood, it was to improve quality of stock in cold weather.
Re: 1941 VKT with stock repair
I always believed that too but a Finnish longtime poster on another post elsewhere said they did indeed need to save stock wood and that is what they did to save it! Hmm now what to believe. Not the splice to stand up against weather extremes which always made sense to me?Maine 20th wrote:Supports present full length. No dovetail seen. Space present right side consistent with repair. Probably a little truth in both cases. It was a different world than we live in today. They didn't waste anything. We live in a throw away society now. Folks back then would be horrified to see what goes in the trash now.zeebill wrote:I always believed that too but a Finnish longtime poster on another post elsewhere said they did indeed need to save stock wood and that is what they did to save it!
