Russian Winchester Model 1895 post WWI

Post by gopedxr7 »

I have a fascination with these and really wish i can ad one to my collection one day.

I read about how they were delivered to the Russian empire during WWI and used in battle. but that is the end of the history about them. what happened to them after the war? were they kept in service by the soviets? i am sure lack of spare parts might have put them aside. still it was a great firearm to just ignore.

Anyone have any history beyond WWI of their service?

Some were sent to Spain as aid by the Soviets during their civil war in '36-"37. There are photos of some in Finland in the Winter/Continuation wars, and of some captured by Germans in WW2. So if they were functional they were used as needed through WW2 but on a very limited basis is my guess.
On Facebook? Check out the non-sporter preservationist group at: OOOPS. Deleted by Facebook because it's evil to even discuss collectible firearms on social media these days.

A lot of the surplused Finn 1895's where rebarreled by there owners to be used as hunting rifles. ( Finland has a caliber minimum size for elk that is over 8mm iirc)

Most of the ones that made it back here seem to be SCW veterans. I guess the Finns found them to useful to export many, if any.

It was reported 7-10 years ago that CAI was interested in some that where still squirreled away in Russian Arsenals, but the price for them didn't justify the cost of importation, paperwork, and shipping. With all the obsolete arms being scrapped in the USSR one has to wonder if these even still exist or if they are part of some new T90.

As this guy,, is shy and not prone to brag about his awesome collection should have added to his post. He has one if not the only one on this forum. He bought it last year.

Yes the one from Kevin's collection is still for sale. It has both Russian Tsar's acceptance marks and the Spanish Civil War markings on it which make it one of 9,000 sent as aid to Spain. Plus it shoots well with a nice bore and I would love to be able to afford but I just bought new wheels so you know that isn't going to happen. Bill Sigh!
