Re: Well this is embarassing...
I'm just glad to be happy with what I got. Maybe round out a few spots if it comes available... But otherwise I'm good.

Re: Well this is embarassing...
In post Burns group days and them having the monopoly on the M39's I remember buying a dozen of them for $110 delivered each. Then Burns decided I may not live long enough to sell all these things and enjoy the profit so if I sell out and get the front money I will live long enough to enjoy the profit and the buyer can set the standards. To hell with the collector they will pay the prices regardless mindlessly to get what they want and besides what do I care. Poof the dream of American capitalism comes true and this is where we sit today like it or not. Extol all sides of it or not it is what it is and will continue to be or maybe get worse. Maybe Classic will go belly up and sell out at a higher price and whoever buys them at auction will raise the prices even higher. I have tried to give up whining about something I have no control over for the New Year so either buy them or don't but keep the decision private and enjoy doing it! Life is too short to sweat the trivial stuff and what is just is!

PS I got off my fat 72 (almost) year old butt and walked around a gun show from 9 until almost 2 selling and searching for my next prize. What does it get you besides being very sore and keeping your heart pumping? $200 all matching Hungarian M44, brushes for cleaning stainless steel type, 3 good gun books. and lots of fun with one of my best buddies and people who like the same things I do! You better heed this warning stop doing and stop living and most of all stop complaining it don't help anything. Just work with what you got and do the best you can!!!!

But the price has doubled or in some cases a lot more in a short time. I don't know about you but my pay has not came close to doubling in that time frame so it's more like hyper inflation.NLMosin wrote:....and when I was a kid bread was 30 cents a loaf and gas was 35 cents a gallon. That wont change regardless of who is in office. Never has never will. Foundationally this country has a system. When one or the other set of rats are running the race certain things get better or worse. One side bitches the others are content. And vice versa. Every system has its potential to be corrupted by either power or greed. That is human nature. But the price has doubled or in some cases a lot more in a short time. We chose capitalism folks. Depending on what part of the world you live in you get what they got and that's what we have. The government does not have the right to tell private enterprises what to charge. You have the right to not purchase their products and show them that their prices are too high. Unfortunately their pockets are usually deeper than yours and ride out any boycott. Even if they concede they were still less affected than you. How can you NOT buy food or gasoline?? Gas doubled and what did we do? Nothing. Consumption didn't go down.
So we pay taxes to our government and we get services for those taxes. Otherwise we would have to switch to an anarco-capitalist society in which we are all responsible for our own protection. While that seems to be the way many many people in this country are starting to think is the better way, I doubt they are really thinking it through. Chaos is tough road to take on a daily basis. How am I going to go to work and leave my house alone and expect anything to be there when I get back? Its unrealistic and impractical.
Nope my pay hasn't changed. I'm in the same boat you fellas are. But remember, you don't need to buy 80 year old mosins. You need to buy gas, and food, and housing. Times have changed. Progress as dictated(intentional use of the word) by the foundational government we have has happened. You cant un-ring a bell. You can take crazy left or right wing arguments but when it really boils down to it the only way to get anything done is across the isle...and good luck with that.

Re: Well this is embarassing...
Well mine came in today and just like any time I buy from one of these luck of the draw places I got the shorter end of the stick. It's a VERY well worn VKT in a SAKO stock with a nice BIG tang crack that goes straight through to the bottom and pretty much no blueing. It's probably a 250 dollar rifle on the top end. On the other hand my FFL did inform me that an old guy bought two cracked specials that came in the same time as mine and both were pretty well perfect one with a small crack, one with no crack they could find and one was a SK.Y....

I have the same luck as you, so I stopped buying surplus unseen and luck of the draw.

I got one of the $249 scratch and dents. It even came with the hangtag. It took me about 2 hours to get it all cleaned up. The rust was under the wood for the most part. More importantly, it is a great shooter. I posted pics in the show off your M39 thread.

Considering my luck with these dealings mine was probably one of the worst of the whole bunch.

Thanks for the headsup on the stock.
I know some VKT M39's came in and or were put in SAKO stocks but I am kind of wondering if this is a stock Classic took off and swapped with an otherwise nice SAKO rifle.

I might have to check the LGS next weekend. They have a sale coming up and have listed M91/30s at $199. Things are looking up here-local Sportman's Warehouse has plenty of pistol gunpowder and other components in stock as well.

Re: Well this is embarassing...
Bought my M39 at a gun show about ten years ago. He said "Here buy this you need one." I said "A Russian?" He said "No, better, a Fin. Look it passes the muzzle test. See the VKT that's Valmet, great barrel". I said it looks like a tank, how much? $78. Oh what the hell...

That's an easy wristbolt repair. Mine was complicated, cracked on both sides of receiver. I had to drill and put woodscrews inside the stock where the magazine sits. It is now a nice '44 Sako with hangtag

Re: Well this is embarassing...
My '42 VKT came from the end of the last shipment. there's a couple fairly recent dings on the stock that I wasn't very happy about but, otherwise I was happy with how it looked considering I tend to have bad luck with these sort of things. I was expecting a pretty beat stock and lots of rust. Blueing is pretty much gone, but it's old and well used. I prefer the look.

What's worse to me than my luck at these sort of things is the fact that classic will not post my somewhat undesirable review ( just stating facts nothing crazy). So if you see something on their site with mostly good reviews just know there's probably a lot of other reviews they didn't allowed to get posted.
