Re: Bore gel
It is supposed to be the same formula as he original Hoppes, just in a thicker form to cling to the metal better. You can be a RMNF forum tester, buy it, use it, report on it.
FREEDOM...USE IT OR LOSE IT!!
Re: Bore gel
I'd be interested to hear how it works. I have always been happy with Hoppes in the past. I am sure it is a good product.

Not yet, I am waiting for your results.

Re: Bore gel
Unless it is on sale no! Cheep Cheep! I use all the old stuff I can find on sale like Balistoll, Kroil Oil, and Sweets 7.62. Wonder products are strictly verboten here. Hoppes is so dang expensive around here I have not used it in awhile. I go through a bunch of stuff with cleaning and setting up stuff for me and others. Joe swears I wear Kroil Oil as an after shave and the shop is overwhelmed with it but I stay away from expensive and wonder products as what I have works just fine for me and is available. Let us know what you think but it ain't going to change me at almost 72!

Re: Bore gel
I have a hard time using Sweets 7.62... The smell and it's hard on my hands.
Kroil is good stuff, But I find I use Gunslick foaming bore cleaner on new acquisitions followed by boiling water and then Break-Free CLP.
Looking forward to this fine, professional & detailed review on the gel Tredegar. I assume you'll be doing it in video format? A full production with charts, comparison tables AND chemical analysis too!

Rongo you don't want to get that stuff on your hands it has an acid base and will eat the hell out of you! Nitrile green based throw away gloves are used by the ton around here when I am in the shop. My hands still take a beating in the winter because I work out in the air all I can. Froze a cleaning rod in the bore one time using Windex and when I got it out of the bore I quit for the day! Even I know when I am beat!

Re: Bore gel
With any solvent, I've found it will work best if you take your kit to the range and clean the bore while it's hot.

I did use the nitrile gloves, which would disintegrate over time anyway, or would rip and the next thing you find your hand burning.zeebill wrote:Rongo wrote:I have a hard time using Sweets 7.62... The smell and it's hard on my hands.

And the sweets loves eating my bore brushes too. And then there's the smell again... which I can't stand. For years I used amoniated stripper at work and am now ultra sensitive to the ammonia smell. Makes me sick real fast.

You may already know this but Amazon i have found is the place to buy cleaning products, targets, and other general accessories. This is especially true if you have amazon prime and take advantage of free 2 day shipping. Way cheaper with free shipping compared to most brick and mortar stores.zeebill wrote:Unless it is on sale no! Cheep Cheep! Cat piss, I know the stink Ron, we had a shop full of cats back in the 80's before we turned them out. The stink was beyond appalling, and even 26 years later on damp summer days you can still smell it.

Re: Bore gel
Usually you get what you pay for in firearms cleaners.....but not always.
For me.....some of these new cleaners work faster but not always better. But most do work faster. If you have the cash in your pocket, try them out. Don't let anyone tell you not to try them. Some of them are fantastic and do what they are intended to do (like remove copper easier and much faster and less chemical smell or hard on your hands). Only way you can know is to try it out yourself.
What I have found is....most cleaners work. Given time and money. Most shooters are fanatical about their brand or type of cleaner they use. Most will not give up on those cleaners no matter what comes out new or might be better. There is no way to know unless you try them out.
I have tried may cleaners and methods. I have noted people become loyal to their method of cleaning ..... to a point that they refuse to even try something else. And they will argue about this for hours on the forums. Use what floats your boat and works for you. Try other methods from time to time and make sure you are happy with the way you are doing it and not wasting your time or money. There are dozens (if not more) recipes on the internet and pre-made mixtures (products).
I don't promote cleaners and haven't for a very long time now. I have given advice on how to clean a rifle to those who have "no clue" how to start. But, I don't recommend cleaners. They all seem to work. For you guys that have already figured out how to clean a rifle, you are on your own. Most know what they are doing. After all, it's not brain surgery!
For me, I think the most important part is at the end.....The oil. Use a good grade firearms oil (and brand). I know, there will be those harping on other types of oil never intended to be put on a firearm, and that is fine if it work for them.
But I don't take a chance on cheap oils.

That's why I hate cats. When I was a teenager our cat cat got shut up in my Dad's 72 Dodge Coronet and pissed on myJunk Yard Dog wrote:Cat piss, I know the stink Ron, we had a shop full of cats back in the 80's before we turned them out. coat in the rear seat. Mama washed that thing a dozen times and never did get the smell out. At least my coat
Caught all of it. The 318 in that car was one tough engine.

Re: Bore gel
I don't mind the cats, so long as they are outside. I only have one inside cat, he's well behaved, and even vomits in the litterbox, but he likes to be outside most of the time. I hate mice, destructive little pests that cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to antiques, especially cars. I keep a small army of stone killers on hand to deal with the mice. All I see are the parts they didn't like once they are done.

So if he coughs up a fur ball does that also go in the litter box? [emoji12]

Re: Bore gel
The best bore cleaner I ever had was the Outer's Foul Out. You'd be surprised at the crap it would get out of a "clean" bore. Apparently they worked too well and they weren't making money on other cleaning products as the solution is no longer available. With no solution it's kind of like a gun without ammo. If any one has a lead on the Cop Out solution, I'm all ears.

Re: Bore gel
One thing I can't recommend with ANY combination of solvent is a stainless steel bore brush. The bristles are just too harsh..patience, patience...(and Kroils with bronze wool..)...that's the key. We all want to be gratified RIGHT NOW... but dirty, nasty bore cleaning takes patience and resolve..plus a finish with a patch or two with Kroil and rottenstone...
